The M249 could also accept magazines but I heard it wasn't that great.Makes me wonder if USMC would have wanted this instead of M27 from a purely technical perspective.

Given what little we still know, I can’t imagine they would. As originally intended the IAR of the USMC was supposed to have magazine feed with high capacity option. But Drums have yet to really meet military reliability. It was supposed to switch between open bolt full auto and semi automatic closed bolt.Makes me wonder if USMC would have wanted this instead of M27 from a purely technical perspective.
IIRC they had some problem with the bolt moving too fast when using magazines and causing malfunction. The M249 could also accept magazines but I heard it wasn't that great.
The Magazine didn’t help either. A lot of that issue cleared up when soldiers switched to PMAGs.IIRC they had some problem with the bolt moving too fast when using magazines and causing malfunction.
It's because the gas setting was set for belt fed mechanism, which requires more energy to cycle the gun vs with mags. Belt fed need to pull the ammo belt, strip cartridge, and cycle the bolt vs just cycling the bolt for mag guns.
Not sure if they've put in any PIP using new gas regulator with mags setting.
