I recall his point was about cost- with so few 625 systems, even in a scaled-down version, there's no way to cover such a vast drone defense area.

Read the transcript I saved. If what you said is true, he wouldn't say laser got better results.

Yes, I listened to that podcast episode, and I remember the context I described being mentioned. In fact, I just rechecked—it appears exactly one minute before your timestamp (starting at 34:10).

Their logic goes like this: To counter massed low-altitude, slow, small drones (FPVs), the proposed solution involves mass-deploying Type 625 systems → but their high unit cost forces downgrades for brigade-to-platoon/company deployment: radar removal (EO/IR sensors only), missile performance reduction → resulting in degraded air defense effectiveness (‘内功’不够). Yet even with these drastic compromises, fielding them in large numbers remains prohibitively costly.

The PLA's current solution is to deploy lower-cost platforms for distributed firepower—which brings us to the focus of this episode: the three variants of the 'Mengshi' armored vehicles.

They are saying 4-8 625s cannot handle the FPV defense workload for a whole brigade, not 625 cannot handle FPVs.

There is no need for rifle caliber when a bird shot do the job. There is actually modified rifle rounds in Russia loaded with bird shots for drones, but I think dedicated shotgun slug is more suitable.
Yeah but the cool factor is worth the tax payer money.

But I think the logic is that if it's a mini gun, it can be used as the Commander weapon station and there's less clutter on the top of the tank which is a big deal. Bird shot would be an additional item as it's not sufficient enough for commander weapon. I know the mini gun will have a lot more bulk but being the only turret on top means no blind spots for drones to abuse too.
