My wild two-cents: How about J6-XX, J6-XY, J6-XZ? Easy to understand and simple to write/type, with the "6" refers to "6th-gen".

Just to be clear, the reason I tweet that is not to brainstorm or solicit ideas for what name we can come up with (we as in the English language side of PLA watching).
In fact, we should actively avoid coming up with ideas for names, because we shouldn't be the ones leading it.


For a project like this, whatever stand-in name we use for the PLA 6th gen fighter, should be coined by the Chinese language PLA watching community.
My point is more to say that I'm hoping they give us a title soon.

A slightly amusing suggestion, but how about XJJ?

The Pinyin spelling for the Chinese term "next generation fighter aircraft" (下一代歼击机) is Xia-yi-dai Jian-ji Ji. If we take the Pinyin initials (sort of), we get XJJ.

Of course XJJ is a very generalized name, but so was J-XX, and since we are many years away from a 7th-gen fighter, we can worry about what to name that later.

Of course XJJ is not very versatile because it's too generalized, but we are many years away from a 7th-gen.

There are lots of potentially sensible acronyms and names we could come up with, but I would rather actively avoid suggesting any names, because we should be taking the lead from the Chinese PLA watching side, and adopting the nomenclature they use.

From what I've noticed, netizens and webpages on Baidu and Weibo always refer the Generation-6 (or 6th-gen) fighters in-general as:
#1. 六代机 (Liu-Dai-Ji) i.e. 6th-gen aircraft; or
#2. 六代战机 (Liu-Dai-Zhan-Ji) i.e. 6th-gen warplane; or
#3. (第)六代歼击机 ((Di-)Liu-Dai-Jian-Ji-Ji), i.e. Generation-6 fighter/6th-gen fighter.

The #3 should be the full name for 6th-gen fighters, but #1 is used most often for the sake of ease of typing.

As an English language forum, we would be better focusing on the NATO reporting name for the new 6th Gen. Flounder/Firebird/Firefang...Firebrand? I guess Firefox is taken as well.

It’s been retired for 25 years already. Nobody would be mistaken just as I won’t feel confused when there’s another “USS Enterprise”.
