That said, Xiyazhou is implying this may actually be a heavier chassis for a true MBT class vehicle.
it's likely. Hard to tell conclusively from this photo, but covered shape on top is also quite similar to some known historical MBT chassis prototypes(weight simulator).
We kinda already have that, and the SPG probably won’t need the thick side skirt armor:
Offtop - historically true, but ukraine experience suggests it damn does, and it's higher priority than even range.

So the Ztz-99 replacement might just be a Ztz100 pro max? Uparmored and upgunned but everything else is the same which simplifies logistics.

That has been said to be an export vehicle. It makes alot more sense to standardise the Type 100 chassis for domestic service.
That’s why if you squint hard enough, it’s really the type-100 fire support vehicle chassis without the side armor. Note the similar road wheel arrangement, albeit also using the different road wheels and double pin tracks set up like the heavy mbt chassis, the placement of the unique exhaust port (one big exhaust above 2 small exhaust) above and slightly in front of the second road wheel. To me it seems to be parts of the same family at least. But we digress. Pictures for comparison:IMG_0144.jpegIMG_0097.jpeg

Interesting to note that this vehicle features double pin tracks unlike the single pin ones on Type 100 support vehicle and tank. Similar or possibly the same type of tracks are also used on the Type 100 SPG.

This and in addition to the extra road wheel and possibly stretched hull points to a heavier vehicle in the mid 40 to 50 tonnes range, it may also not be simply a Type 100 stretch or mod but perhaps a new vehicle with shared parts like common armor modules. AFAIK, quite alot of big shrimps were pointing to a cleansheet or atleast heavily redesigned fork of the Type 100 design for a true 4th generation MBT design.

The full version of Type 100 with the full armor package to reach the Level 2 protection shown in the picture will weigh more than >40t. APS is unlikely to be relied on to wholly replace physical armor like some has speculated, atleast not in its current form. The current form of Type 100 tank is also very far from actual finalising due to the current version being finalised pre-2022, it is in fact said to be further from service than the Type-98 or 9910 version of Type 99 in the 1998 parade. It is speculated that the Type 100 will go through multiple reiterations in this year before finalising soon, hopefully.
