I don't know where to put this, since we don't have a dedicated thread on naval air defense missiles, so here will have to do.

Below is an excerpt from an academic paper that talks about a tri-mode (microwave + infrared+ radar) seeker. This might well have to do with the HQ-10, which is widely used as a point air defense system on naval ships. I had always thought the HQ-10 has a dual-mode seeker, but it might have a tri-mode seeker instead.

Corrections on translation errors are welcome.

The active millimeter-wave radar seeker adopts phased array technology. It's compact, light weight, and has fast scanning speed, large scanning range, strong jamming resistance, and high guidance accuracy. The imaging infrared seeker adopts focal-plane array technology. In order to reduce seeker size, both the infrared detector and the millimeter-wave antenna use a common-aperture composite Cassegrain optical/phased array antenna system.

Do you know when the paper was published?

Personally I admit I'm a little skeptical as to the idea that this could be for HQ-10.

Multimode SAMs and AAMs is definitely a trend, but HQ-10 seems too small for such a complex seeker -- not only imaging infrared with radar, but an AESA seeker at that!

But if it was present on a BVRAAM or a larger SAM, it would be very reasonable.

Unfortunately, I have no information other than what's in the image. The only reason HQ-10 came to my mind was due to the seeker's superficial visual similarity to that of the HQ-10 and nothing more, so your skepticism is definitely warranted.

Unfortunately, this brief 2004 paper (copy as

) may have little to do with actual applications in developing weaponry. It seems to be more of a general exploratory/review piece on existing literature for potential benefits in advanced missile guidance involving tri-mode seekers. The diagram used is likely just notional.

There is also a more recent 2021 paper (2nd file

) going over similar discussions for tri-mode guidance at greater technical depths, and by authors with considerably higher authority --- first author LU Fugang is a resident researcher at Xi'an Modern Control Technology Research Institute (aka NORINCO

, one of the principal state institutions in developing precision guided munitions and weapon guidance systems in general), whom also apparently serves (or at least served) as "chief scientist" at NORINCO.

The concluding remark in the 2nd paper mentions its research verifies the feasibility of a "certain multi-mode seeking system" “plan/program". This would likely help to confirm PLA has an ongoing tri-mode seeker program under active development, but it doesn't seem to indicate PLA already has an existing system that offers such capability.



For anyone's interest, here also is a listing of published articles by authors affiliated with the said Institute 203 during past several years:

It seems if one spends too much time writing a post, the system may not save edits made after a certain point in time when the user finally decides to post it.

Missing a short paragraph after "offers such capability" and before "For one's interest":
"And postulating from how the paper still seems to hold practical feasibility concerns over fusing three separate modes, and has focus on theoretical designs and simulation analysis, it may suggest the research cycle for the whole domain (ie. tri-mode seekers in all applications) is yet to enter advanced stages of development, assuming there isn't significant intentional delays in the publishing of the article (which can certainly be likely)."

Since you're a newcomer, it's fine.

Once you click "psot reply" on the bottom right corner, you would be allocated 20 minutes to edit your post or replace the whole post with the word "delete" if you wish for your post to be deleted by the moderators later. Only moderators can delete posts by themselves.

Once the 20 minute-mark has been reached, your post would be permanently locked, and no attempts at editing and asking for delete of post can be done.
