I'm sure the US would also have such a capability to deploy deep sea submersible and recovery ships for salvage operation. But it will more costly and take much longer time to prepare and travel.

There is another thing that is less reported but is making the Indonesian wary of the West. As the problem in Irian Jaya is not going away, they suspects that the West(aka Australians) might have a hand in fermenting the unrest. Just last month, the head of Indonesian intelligence over there was ambushed and killed by the separatists.

The thing is Indonesia doesn't exactly trust Australia given the East Timor thing, and Australia is in Five Eyes along with the US. Should the US map the sea floor while doing the recovery there's high chance they will share this with Australia.

Of course Indonesia doesn't exactly trust China to do the same thing, but they made a call and decided they need to pick the lesser evil from their POV.

I would also add that the Chinese help was free whereas I heard (rumours?) that the US would charge Indonesia $200m for this operation

In case of asking the US assistance, the salvage cost could reach up to $200 million according to The Australian's article.
