PLAN's new training sailing ship...
The PLAN should have recreated a traditional Chinese sailing ship for training first, then have a Western one like this, it's mainly a show boat either way and a Chinese style one would be more appropriate. They should still do it, recreate one of the Zheng He fleet ships. Shame on whoever decided on this ship.

This is one point that I will agree upon, this so called "training ship" does not really impart any modern sailing skills onto the sailors on it in the modern age of naval engines. China should have gone with a more traditional design to reflect on its culture and history.

If I don't see one mast or a bunch of guys rowing on each side, it's a Chinese designed ship. If the J-20 is stolen from the F-22 and F-35 because they look so similar, use that logic.

Are traditional Chinese sail ships really suitable? This PLAN sail ship is outfitted with modern propulsion in addition to sails. Traditional Chinese sail ships might not be suitable for being driven by propellers.
Certain skills are never out of date. Seamanship is more than about how to man a radar or weapons station. It's also about teamwork, working with ropes/lines, mooring, anchoring, reading navigation charts, not to mention basic cohesion and communication. These skills don't require a fancy and expensive modern ship to hone. Similarly, why do you think armies still train recruits in basic marching?

I imagine having such ships is less about the technological mechanics and more about having the crew working together. A lot of stuff is happening on those ships to make them operate properly.
Firstly, I have no idea what is the point of training sailors on a sail ship, regardless western or Chinese. The sailors in the sailing era were trained on the same ship they used at the time, so can and should be best that today's sailor being trained on modern ships.
That being said, there is one reason against Chinese traditional sailing ships. The sailing skills of handling Chinese sail ships and the experience of building Chinese sailing ship of that size were lost ever since the end of Zhenghe's voyage in 1433, that is almost 600 years. For whatever reason if PLAN need a sail ship, the only way to build it and have training curriculum in place in a few years is looking to the west.

Perfect opportunity for some archaeology, research, and improvisation. It's never too late though, so hopefully they'll come up with one in the future.
