Reciprocation and not protests or bombastic outrages is the proper way to address foreign naval ships cruising off a country's coast, while in international waters. I hope China continues the new model of major country behavior and support Freedom of Navigation that's supported by the great majority of nations.

In what would reportedly be a first, five ships from China's navy have been spotted in the Bering Sea, operating in international waters of the Alaskan coast, Pentagon officials tell The Wall Street Journal.

The U.S. officials also tell the Journal that the military ships aren't seen as behaving in a threatening way.

The reported Chinese activity is being seen as the latest sign of China's ambitions to project its influence beyond its territorial waters. The sighting also comes on the same day Beijing is hosting a large military parade and celebration to mark the end of World War II.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is hosting leaders from a number of neighboring countries as part of those events.

Unfortunately, not every nation has the luxury to respond in your proposed manner when their national interests are perceived violated/threatened. China only gained that luxury recently. So I don't think your statement would sound lovely to most other countries in the world who are small and weak.
Otherwise, I do agree with your statement that China's new approach is more effective to get her voice heard and message received.

These five PLAN ships are from the recently completed Russian and Chinese Joint Sea II naval exercise around Sea of Japan and off Vladivostok. (hanwag of CD says they are 115, 547, 568, 989, 889) Since they are in the neighborhood, I guess they took a spin off Alaska's Coast and see how the U.S reaction will be to their present.

Since it was the USN who usually do these type of thing near Chinese coast areas. They figure the U.S side won't be able to criticize their present near the Alaska's coast or ended up looking like a hypocrite regarding freedom of navigation the U.S always harping on in the East and South China sea.

That's some key information that is missing. 12 miles or 200 miles off the coast? Visiting foreign territory, actually transiting, or loitering just to get close to the Alaskan coast? Smells like spin on less than half the story.

...and I'm sure those ships were under surveillance by P-3s or P-8s..which ever is deployed to NAF ADAK...with F-22's from Elmendorf AFB on standby.

China might propose that innocent passage will always be acceptable but that both countries will agree not to held exercises within two hundred miles of the other's coast. Taiwan, SCS, ....

BTW I thought I heard the BBC say this morning Barendt's Sea!

Next time, China probably gonna send hundred of large fishing vessels escorted by PLAN naval ships and fishing off international water off Alaska. Tons of Salmon, Dungoness crabs, Mackerels to be had. Very rich fishing ground. The Deadly Catch.

I don't think fishing vessels need escort from the PLAN since I highly doubt anyone would attack an unarmed civilian vessel and since they are still in International waters it wouldn't really make much sense.
