Hyperwarp

Captain
it would've been in the great tradition of this Forum to assume it had been the US warship about to ram the Chinese LOL

If the USS Decatur wanted a collision with the 052C all it had to do was stay on-course and from what I understood according to freedom-of-navigation they actually had the right to stay on-course since these waters are considered international waters by everyone else. But the photos say otherwise. USS Decatur literally slammed the brakes and took evasive maneuvers (to the right). There is really no need for such a risky interception potentially causing a huge international incident.

I have a question to Popeye and Jeff: What is the exclusion zone around a carrier battle group when it comes to other vessels. What is the closest a military or commercial vessel can come without permission towards the carrier?

Not sure about that.
When I saw the news I was more surprised that this kind of aggressive intercept wasn't done earlier.

Given the way Sino-US relations have been recently a move like this should've been expected really.

The Chinese DDG didn’t drop out of warp. From the photo, we can see that the two ships were on a gradual convergence course, but the key word is gradual.

The western media is of course spinning this to heap all the blame on China and in its usual sensationalist manner, but the US captain also took a conscious and deliberate choice not to chance course until he was within shouting distance of the Chinese ship.

If he was concerned about the safety of his ship and crew, he could have ordered a course change well before the two ships got anywhere like as close as they did.

America has consistently proven that it doesn’t respect international laws or deals. They keep doing things China doesn’t like, which China have told them repeatedly every time they do it. Is it any wonder that China is now hardening its position and responding in the only language America’s actions show the respect?

Like when they built islands out of seabed in the SCS (which they claim for themselves), militarized those islands despite earlier promises not to do so, and ignored an UN court ruling? Oh wait...

I don't think any great power can lay claim to a spotless record in obeying every single ratified law, but let's not pretend that China has the higher moral ground in this instance.

I imagine it was very much a mutual "I'm not touching you" kind of situation, but it's pretty obvious that the 052C was seeking to cause the Burke to change course which is to be expected given the goals of each side.

USN ships have essentially been doing the "I'm not touching you" game in the form of the FONOPs, and it seems like on this occasion the PLAN gave the go ahead for it to be reversed. I'll be interested to see if this is part of a new pattern or if it is just a one off

Any proof? The International Court of Justice ICJ (an UN-Institution) distances itself clearly from the ruling of the kangurooh court called Permanent Court of Arbitration PCA ( a non UN-Institution).
There isn't any UN court ruling in case of the South China Sea. So stop spreading lies!!!
