Russia & China to Conduct the 1st Joint Amphibious Assault Drill in Sea of Japan

According to Russian news agency TASS, Russian and Chinese Navy signed in Vladivostok on Friday a protocol on the Join Sea-2015 drills. These maneuvers will for the first time involve a joint amphibious assault drill in Russia’s Primorsky territory with the participation of carrier-based aircraft, said Russian Pacific Fleet spokesman Roman Martov.

We'll see in August if "participation of carrier-based aircraft" means an actual CV (or two!) will take part, or just the air wings

Interesting. Isn't the Kuznetsov going to be laid up at they yards in this time frame?

If so, and if a joint exercise using carrier based aircraft is planned in the Sea of Japan, I expect it is going to be the Liaoning that provides the air cover.

That will be something to see.

What about a few Russian Su-33s conducting ops off of Liaoning alongside J-15s? That would certainly be interesting.

Bet there will be lots of eyes in the sky and under the sea observing this exercise if carrier based aircrafts are involve. Sea of Japan it's going to get crowded with other nations intelligence collection units.

Didn't Japan just did an exercise with American Marines on how to invade and retake an island captured by hostile forces not long ago. And then you have the 30,000 U.S and Australian troops with some Japanese officers and soldiers in a drill for early July. It's just Tit for tat in a way of sending messages to each other from both sides.

Russian pilots should have no problem conducting ops off of Liaoning because it will be just like Kuznetsov, maybe they will have Russian communication officers on Liaoning to coordinate with Russian pilots. It will be quite a sight to see both Kuznetsov and Liaoning together though.

I think it is a little premature to say that Russian fixed-wing aircraft will fly off of the Liaoning.

It is more likely to me that Chinese aircraft will provide air support for the exercise. That either individual amphibious/air assault echelons of Chinese and Russian troops would be involved in landing exercises. They may have them do so jointly.

I would expect that Russian and Chinese ships would also provide fire support.

We will have to wait and see...but at this stage I would rate the chance of Russian fixed wing aircraft operating off of the Liaoning as a fairly low probability.

Ha!.. It takes the Russians two weeks to conduct 40 sorties. Those Russians are in the minor leagues of carrier operations. The low minors...and that's a fact. I hope I did not hurt anyone's feelings.

A little cross decking? Maybe...I'd like to see that.

Is CV-16 really ready to participate in this scale of an exercise? They've been cutting doughnuts in the western Pacific for four years..they SHOULD be all geared up and ready to go...In the words of that great American Jeff Head.. "Time will tell".

The Royal Thai Navy announced Thursday that the government has suspended action on the high-profile with China, which was still seeking final approval from the cabinet. The decision to put the deal on hold came after domestic and international experts expressed concern over how the deal with Beijing would affect Bangkok’s relations with the U.S.

“We will wait for now and not introduce it to the cabinet for approval,” Prawit Wongsuwan, the deputy prime minister and defense minister, said, according to a report by China’s Wongsuwan reportedly also added that the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) would continue to conduct research on the suitability of the deal and weigh the costs and benefits to the country before finalizing the deal, according to .

“It’s clear that the U.S. definitely does not want to see any closer cooperation between China and Thailand, especially in terms of military and defense,” Li Haidong, a professor at the China Foreign Affairs University told the Global Times, who added that it is “understandable and predictable” that Thailand reacted this way because the U.S. diplomacy was a very important priority.

Historically, Bangkok has been a crucial ally for the U.S. in the Asia Pacific region, a relationship that is reciprocated by Thailand. However, China’s growing status as a global economic, political and military power has made Beijing an appealing regional partner to Thailand.

Now, bilateral ties between Beijing and Bangkok have been overshadowing those between amid political turmoil following the 2014 coup that ousted Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and put Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha in power. The U.S. has explicitly expressed a reluctance to work with the new prime minister and have when it comes to their annual military drills, the Cobra Golden Exercise.





Ouch. Seems like China is having bad luck for the past few years selling major systems. Now I wonder what happend to that HQ-9 Turkey deal.....

Still on the table as the most favorable choice. We have to wait and see by the end of July.

I would like to see Adm K sail to the Far East through the Arctic Sea but I don't expect it.
