Speak of the devil. Why didn’t Jai Hind land participate? I thought that they had the best mountain troops in the world?
Universe. Hoth would never have fallen to the Empire if the Mountain Strike Corps was defending it.

On a more serious note, why was a US officer doling out the medals rather than Austrian? Also, what make of skis do the PLA use, both in this competition and generally? I'm guessing all mountain troops use telemark bindings, at least the French and Japanese troops I've seen at various resorts do.

One positive from the PLA win is that other units will probably take snow related training/equipment a lot more seriously from this point on. A lot of units in WTC still haven’t started using snowshoes for heaven’s sake.
the distinct absent of snowshoes in the PLA is indeed perplexing. however, in this particular case it might not apply. snowshoes are more useful in flat terrain. when you are dealing with mountains they are not very helpful. that is why they were invented by the Canadians.

After over a decade of searching, I have finally found a clear image of what's printed on the red labels usually seen on Chinese small arms. It lists the unit to which the firearm belongs to, its model designation and name, a serial number, and the name of the soldier to whom the firearm is issued.

On this note, Ayi and friends note in that first video PLA was cooking instant noodle (plus slices of spam and egg) in a pot while other teams are eating reheated MRE.

Someone notes this in particular is a demonstration of practical experience operating in the cold and at high elevation. Someone else in that chat was asking "what's wrong with reheated MRE?" and was told he will get why it's a bad idea if he goes to Xinjiang Military District and eat MRE for 2 days.

So yeah apparently hot soupy food is important under those conditions, I wouldn't have known either.

Someone else suggests cooking instant noodle and letting the nice smell waff around is being nice about it. If the PLA team wanted to be in your face about this they could have brought DIY HaiDiLao hotpot instead.
As a regular hiker/snowshoeing/ski in the Rockies that can have trails from 10km to 100 km+ (multiday). It is extremely important to have high calorie food that is hot and soupy. Wakeup first thing in morning sleeping in -15C snow and eating semi warm food sucks. At 4000 m water boils at like 60-70C, so it's not even hot food.

I had MREs before for multi day hikes, got to say it tastes pretty terrible by end of first day. Not enough moisture and it never hits the spot.
