PLA is testing a new intelligent data collection system for field equipment. The system collects and transmits data on various equipment in real time over the entire battlefield for statistical analysis and then distributes the results (in visual form) to what appear to be handheld terminals.

China is recruiting non-commissioned officers (NCOs) for specific purposes among 2022 national college entrance examinations (or gaokao) sitters for the first time since the nation launched the NCO program, underscoring the country's efforts to boost the quality of its troops and improve the employment of graduates at the same time.

According to China Central Television (CCTV), 2022 gaokao sitters can apply for a three-year program at relevant universities and colleges, and those qualified would be recruited as NCOs.

Applicants should be under 20 years old and single, and they should meet the requirements for political and physical conditions in line with the rules for military enlistees.

Universities and colleges will be responsible for the first two and a half years of academic instruction. In the final half year, the military will take over their instruction as cadets. The schools will handle the final graduation procedures.

Afterward, program participants will get military ranks as NCOs, effective from September 1 of their graduation year.

From the day the specially trained NCOs enter service until they are given ranks for the first time, they will enjoy the same benefits as first-year conscripts like subsidies, fares, medical support and insurance. After becoming NCOs, they will get the salary and benefits for such positions, per the CCTV report.

Applications can be made for six majors at six schools, depending on applicants' gender, according to CCTV. The report did not announce what the six majors are.

Training NCOs will effectively boost the quality of the troops, a Chinese military expert and veteran who works with recruitment told the Global Times on Tuesday, requesting anonymity.

It is an alternative for studying at a military academy and becoming an officer, the expert said.

When cadets graduate, they are ready for their posts almost instantaneously and can keep doing their jobs there like a career, unlike compulsory service that lasts only two years, the expert said.

At a time when technology is becoming increasingly important in the military, it has become important to keep such people in the military for longer periods, the expert said.

This milestone also comes as attention increasingly focuses on the employment pressure for new graduates.

Joining the military through the program will provide many young students with stable jobs, and prepare them for future careers in highly competitive sectors such as the civil service or state-owned-enterprises, observers said.

A Sina Weibo user going by the name of Xuanmaya told the Global Times that the policy is great, and she hopes that her son who will participate in gaokao next year would also have the opportunity to apply.

Another netizen named Feixu said that she wants her younger brother to apply for it, saying "it would be great for him to have a job right after graduation."

Some netizens also called for more recruitment consideration to be given for women candidates.

The Global Times has previously reported that the

, and job-hunting is even more difficult than in 2020 at the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic, China's Ministry of Education said recently. Some 10.76 million students are about to leave campus this summer, an increase of 1.67 million year-on-year, hitting a new record high.

Data compiled by Zhilian Recruitment showed that the civil service or SOEs are the main choices of many Chinese graduates, indicating a trend to seek stability. Compared with private companies, some 44 percent of graduates prefer a job at an SOE, up from 42.5 percent in 2021.

Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, said the development would achieve double benefits as it would ease the employment pressure for graduates as well as boost the quality of China's troops, laying the ground for the construction of a professional military.

It will increase the percentage of professional soldiers and officers in the military, who will become the backbone forces in the fields of combat and support capability, which is very helpful for building a professional military, Song told the Global Times on Tuesday.

chinese culture highly values education and the recruitment pool for the pla is huge, but still, college educated ncos is kind of a surprising fact

In the western tradition NCOs will start off as ordinary soldiers and work their way up. They provide the experience to go with the officers (supposed!) intelligence.
NCOs are responsible for the training of soldiers (both enlisted and officers) while the officers does the planning and daily paper work. It is important for any armed forces to have as many experienced and long term career NCOs in the ranks to produce the next quality military personnel.

As June 15 marks the second anniversary of the deadly Galwan Valley clash, comrades-in-arms of border defense heroes and many Chinese netizens expressed their tribute with some sharing moments on social media, commemorating the martyrs and paying tribute to those Chinese soldiers hailed as the real model of the young generation.

A video published by the military channel of China Central Television, released to the public for the first time an image of Chen Xiangrong and his comrades-in-arms. Chen is one of the martyrs who sacrificed his life for the defense of the Chinese territory during the border standoff with India in 2020. "Every time I took a photo of him, he smiled at me." said Chen Wei, one of Chen Xiangrong's comrades-in-arms who took the picture. "Why didn't I take more photos of him?" Chen Wei lamented.

Chen Xiangrong died at the age of 19, and the fighting slogan "My pure love is only for China" written by Chen inspires thousands of millions of Chinese people. After two years, many expressed their remembrance for those young heroes.

On Wednesday, the PLA Southern Xinjiang Military Command organized activities to commemorate border defense heroes and inspire officers and soldiers to train and prepare for war.

Comrades-in-arms of Wang Zhuoran, another of the martyrs who sacrificed his life to safeguard national sovereignty and territory in the clash, shared the story of the hero on Wednesday, inspiring other officers and soldiers to learn from him, practice skills, and fight for the motherland and the people.

Also, a reenactment of the battle was staged at the command, featuring how the heroes defended the country and guarded the border, to encourage others to follow suit.

Four Chinese officers and soldiers sacrificed their lives and one was seriously injured during the incident. They were all awarded by the Central Military Commission. A total of 20 Indian soldiers died in the skirmish.

The People's Liberation Army Western Theater Command published an article on Wednesday saying that "two years on, we still miss you very much" as June 15, 2020 is a date that will never be forgotten in the history of border defense.

The article also looked back to the incident, saying that Chinese border officers and soldiers have exercised restraint and tried their utmost to safeguard the overall interests of bilateral relations and peace in the border areas while facing illegal provocations by the other side.

In desperation, the border guards resolutely fought back the aggression, achieving major victories and effectively safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Western Theater Command also shared some updates from the relatives of those heroes. For example, the son of Chen Hongjun, the battalion commander, held a photo of his father while calling him. Such heartwarming moment also touched the hearts of many Chinese netizens.

"They have never been far away and we have never forgotten," a netizen said on Chinese Twitter-like Weibo, while another said: "Pay tribute! We'll always remember you."

In February 2021, the Central Military Commission issued commendations to the servicemen for their role in bravely fighting back provocations by foreign forces in the Galwan Valley. The title of "Border-defending Hero" was conferred posthumously to Battalion Commander Chen Hongjun, while Chen Xiangrong, Xiao Siyuan and Wang Zhuoran received first-class merits.

Note how it says “specific purposes” in the beginning of the article. My guess is that these graduates will be NCO’s in units that are more hands on with technology that deals with things like cyber warfare, ELINT gathering development, and more. Putting them in those positions would allow them to help provide and implement input from another angle, thereby encouraging innovation within that unit. That’s really smart since China has a huge pool of STEM students that can really provide that talent to the military. Also it prevents Chinese students from falling into the H1B honeypot trap.
