General
The Standing Committee of National People's Congress is drafting changes to ranks of non-commissioned officers and conscripts.

Google translation:

"The draft proposes that the ranks of soldiers are divided into sergeant rank and conscript rank.

The rank of sergeant is set to "third class and seven ranks". Senior Sergeant: Sergeant Major 1st Class, Sergeant Major 2nd Class, Sergeant Major 3rd Class; Intermediate Sergeant: Sergeant 1st Class, Sergeant 2nd Class; Junior Sergeant: Sergeant and Corporal. Among the sergeant ranks, a sergeant major is the highest rank and a corporal is the lowest rank.

The ranks of the conscripts are divided into high-ranking soldiers and private soldiers from high to low."

The thin and thick chevron stripes are not very distinguishable.
I agree , but it has been this way since later 90s if not earlier ,by this point it might just be a legacy problem.
Though I think the idea these days was that you can sort of tell what rank and job one holding the rank would have.
1 chevrons - he is a squad leader or a deputy squad leader
2 chevrons - he is a platoon staff
3 chevron & beyond - he is a company lvl and higher staff

China's defense budget expected to grow at around 7% in 2022 amid security threats: experts

These circumstances also mean that China needs to continue to increase its national defense capabilities with steadily growing budgets, Fu said, noting that China will also not be involved in an arms race, as it has kept its defense spending at only 1.3 percent of its GDP in recent years, far lower than the US.

In 2022, China will likely launch its third aircraft carrier, expand production of the J-20 stealth fighter jet, and modernize its nuclear arsenal, which all needs the support of a sufficient budget, observers said.

Seems like the budget will steadily grow similar to previous years.

The new insignias' designs are quite awful. Some are not distinguishable at all, unless you look at them very carefully. One would think they would take that into account when designing these things. Dissapointing.
