An upgraded Y-9 platform is perfectly suitable if not better platform for ASW than a commercial aircraft. The P-8A was only procured after development issues with lockheed's P-7 which was an iterative improvement on the P-3. An ideal aircraft for a base for special mission aircraft could very well be a low mounted wing variant of the Y-9, which although fun to entertain is almost definitely not worth developing. I would love to see it though.

Honestly, the ideal aircraft for ASW is probably a cheap single prop drone with just enough fuel capacity to get on station and loiter for a sufficient time and just enough payload capacity to carry a MAD boom on its tail. And then you build 10,000 of them and cover the ocean.

ASW UAVs will become complementary, force-multiplication components to the manned ASW aircrafts, not a solution meant to replace the manned ASW aircrafts entirely.

Another image of KJ-3000. Note the image has been enhanced by the mobile device that took it.

P-8 is very useful for MP/ASW roles for US for their operatios in West Pacific in particular because their operation stations are near China but far away from their airbases in Japan, Guam and Australia. They need an aircraft with long range, long endurance and fast speed to reach seas near China.

But does China need a similar aircraft like P8 so that they can patrol waters near Guam and Australia? May be in the future but now now , not in near future. Y9 based aircraft are good enough for SCS and seas upto 2nd island chains.

If Chinese are desperate (they are not) for a P8 equivalent in airframe shape and functions ASAP, they can easily convert a few second hand Boeing 737 source domestically or from Russia and militarised them.

China already had converted a few Boeing 737 to air command aircraft for PLAAF. They didn't even change the engines.

The advantages of the turboprops were not disputed.

What if such C919 variant will be not available in time? This was why we had this discussion. Do you think PLA will just wait for the C919 or will they look for another turbofan body that is readily available?
Developing an all new turboprop or turbofan is likely going to take longer time than putting domestic engine on C919

What they need to do is a variant that has latest turboprop engine, upgraded avionics and a lot of composite usage + larger fuel load. That would be enough. If they really go crazy, they can do hybride electric engine, which would be even more efficient. But that's not necessary.
Domestic C919 is meant to be ready by 2027. It's likely if they wanted any military variants, development would be parallel.
that would be an optimistic scenario.

right, I could see 1 Y-9 MPA leading a whole bunch of drones
