Sure, it's very plausible there are 16+ in service. I was merely asking about a source that would be considered as credible outside china-watcher circles, that actually states that.

For example, when SOC contributes to an article in Jane's and says there are at least 9 drones of YX kind active, that's a decent source.

If Deino stated there are 16 active, in an article published in Air International/AFM, that'd also be a good source. But it'd have to be phrased like "Photographic evidence shows no less than XX are in service.". As opposed to a phrase "Photograhpic evidence suggest up to XY might be in service", which would not constitute as valuable a claim as the first one.

For the PLAAF we have all assigned to the 26th Division:

- 30072, 30073, 30074, 30075, 30077 and 30078 are confirmed by sometimes several images, missing are 30071 and 30076

For the PLA NA we have:
- 85091, 85092 and one more (w.o. number confirmed) assigned to the 9th Naval Air Division spotted at Lingshui - SSF
- 81033 + 81036 ... those are assigned to the re-established 3rd Naval Air Division reportedly spotted at Lingshui, so most likely they are renumbered/reassigned from the 9th NAD.
- we have reports about KJ-500 in the NSF (most likely 2nd Naval Air Division) and the reformed 1st Naval Air Division already operates some KQ-200 ASW, so an AEW asset is not unlikely.

Overall given the airframes spotted at Hangzhou - esp. in late 2017 - there are alone 8 KJ-500s more available.

I agree with the analysis, in all likelihood there are plenty KJ500 active. I am looking for a source stating that explicitly. (With or without the analysis, even.) If your book states there are at least 16 in service (I don't know as I don't have the book) then yeah, that's also a decent source for someone looking for citations.

Totoro, it is very hard to find an 'offically' written source, that is open to the public, on these matters. Sometimes when pictures show up, the photographer doesnt even know that he /she hot gold till the pic is analysed (reminds me of good ole MP.net). So we rely on peple like Deino, or even Dennis Blasko and Ken Allen for assessments on PLA stuff.

I am confused. You say I won't find any written source. Then you say I can quote your book. Does that mean there is a line in the book that says "there are at least 16 KJ500 in service" or something to that extent?

Yes, I made a table of all operational types and their estimated numbers.
For the NA-book it is p. 29 and for the PLAAF book it's p. 92.
