Why is rocket-assisted takeoff not an option?
The US tested that for a few years early on and found it did not offer the benefits that the catapults do.

The Harriers and F-35s, in essence, use their vectored thrust to accomplish the same thing on the LHD/LHAs.

I suppose it could be an option...but the US Navy does not need that type of technology given what it already has...and I expect the PLAN will come to the same conclusions.

So without cats the options are design a very short take off bird that can be recovered with the arrester gear, a option that no one has really done. Or Helicopter/ Rotary wing like the Kamov.

Its feasible, very feasible but for the US and Europe as they have tilt rotors now the V22 and AW609. The PRC has the Blue Whale concept but they would need to actually build it. At least a decade for the Aircraft and that's before the radar and systems

Check this out: a very lightweight ELINT aircraft dubbed the CSA-003. The aircraft also has EO/IR sensors.


Strange, that would be a version of the Diamond DA42 and Diamond is an Austrian company. That type is already in service in several Air Forces....

I know they have a production line in CHina, but that this could sell this aircraft alone would be new to me ...

I believe they have to solve the problem with the big propellers that rotates in front of the radar.

Ah yes. Good point. Forget 360' coverage. It should still work in the rear hemisphere but not sure how useful that will be. The forward array will have to be in-front of the propellers
