That is great because for a situation which requires eyes in the sky but not a flown blown large AWACS the medium sized AWACS is a good more economical solution, AWACS are expansive to fly so cutting down the cost by having a medium sized is a good choice

I don't think that is entirely correct the designer also talk about miniaturization of the component in other word reduced the weight and volume of bulky component KJ-2000 into much smaller and lighter component in order to be fitted into much smaller Y9. That is the reason for all digital phase array. Now that the Chinese electronic industry is advanced enough to produce such component. In other word they don't want to wait until Y-20 finish testing .They want KJ 2000 capability in much smaller format and cheaper that can be produced in large number NOW and cheaper to operate .

This is not PLAAF version of ZDK03. And why it never entered service with PLAAF because a better AWAC is in the pipeline. It is milestone in AWAC design and quantum leap in capability

Well that would make sense since KJ-2000 is 10 years old, they built a small number of them gathered the experience and now shifted to something better on a smaller platform

That would also mean that if and when they build AWACS based on Y-20 it would be a pretty advanced piece of equipment, this would mean medium sized balance beam and rotodome, the KJ-2000 and a larger more advanced Y-20 AWACS which would be considerably better than the current KJ-2000 and KJ-300/500 units, I would think that a larger new rotodome is under development right now

Could it be that this new radar is not a simple disk as on the KJ-2000 but more an egg ?! :confused:

I believe that is a old picture, it shows a Y-8 ELINT, as a matter of fact you can see 2 more Y-8 ELINT in the background, those tails in yellow primer

I think a Sqaudron of these will be soon handed over to the PLAN
