The 96G is a refit of the 96, replacing applique and adding sensors. There is no need to make a entire new tank to do the replacement. The new builds of the 96 will be to the 96G standard and the original 96s will likely be brought up to the 96G standard over time. The 99 is still too expensive to build in large numbers (though rumor has it around 100 a year now, while for 96G it is 200). The 152mm gun armed tank is just a rumor and there's no hard evidence yet.

I think the picture u post is Type99G... Note the laser dazzler on the top right side of the turret. It is exclusive only on Type98 and Type99G
Also, you can see the headlights on T-99 is far back than T-96.

is that 99 injected diesel into the engine for native smoke screens? Or is that smoke from smoke grenades?

Looks like injected diesel from the exhaust, rather than smoke grenades.
