Already done.

The first space shuttle was named Enterprise. It flew as a test flight vehicle and was meant to be refitted with heat shields and rocket engines for space mission at a later date. The plan wasn't carried out because weight-saving design changes rendered the refitting costly and time consuming.

I don't really think the US Navy really any more super carriers, as it already possess 11 of them and up to another 20 amphibious attack ships in the coming years. Each of those ships weigh around 50,000 tons, the same weight as a medium sized carrier. The US navy is an overkill to any countries in the world, even including Russia and China. Plus, there will be no major conflicts in the foreseeable future that would put America opposite to an enemy that requires it to use all its carriers.

I don't think the new US carrier is an overkill as it would eventually replace the older ones. Besides, there is a lot of waterways to cover. Example: the Commander of the USN 7th Fleet recently pledged his commitment to ensure freedom of the seas from the Pacific right thru' to the East China Sea, South China Sea and Indian Ocean. There is always a need to prepare for any eventualities including humanitarian assistance (Tsunamis etc.). I am sure most Asian Countries welcome this presence.

Oh well..that's how we roll.. Actually the USN is replacing Enterprise and eventually the Nimitz. So the CVN strenght will remain at 11. The LHA strength will also remain at 10. This is mandated by US law. Which I'm sure is based on treaties with NATO & SEATO. And of course the US own stratgic interest.

My favourite US Carrier of all time was the USS Yorktown (CV-5). It played such a crucial role in the Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway (my favourite naval battle of all time). It only stayed afloat for 5 years, but what a great 5 years it was.

I'd love to have the new CVN renamed USS Yorktown. Enterprise is nice too.

The Petition must be full or expired I tried too sign it and It won't let any one.
I really hope too see another Enterprise and perhaps a Hornet or Yorktown I just can't see A USS Goldwater I really dislike naming ships of the line, after politicians, Founding fathers no issue Abe Lincoln Not a problem John F Kennedy Acceptable...
One thing I would like too see is the Next USN boomer Class the SSBN-X no matter if she is a derivative of Virgina class ( given modern times I think the better option) or a totally new hull resurrect the name USS Monitor.

Amen.. Barry Goldwater was a great man..a great American but not, in my opinion, deserving of having a CVN named after him.

I've always wondered why there never was a USS Thomas Jefferson major surface combatant or even a CV/CVN. I mean there is no argument he was one of the more important figure in Unites States history
