Saudi Arabia is wrapping up the “major combat phase” of operations and planning to focus on air support and training of forces fighting Houthi rebels, almost a year since the coalition intervened to reinstate Yemen’s exiled president in power.
“We are in the end of the major combat phase,” the spokesman told AFP, adding that Riyadh wants to create a stable security situation, before helping with the reconstruction of the country.
“The aim of the coalition is to create a strong cohesive government with a strong national army and security forces that can combat terrorism and impose law and order across the country,” al-Asiri told the Associated Press.
He also emphasized that the coalition’s primary duty is to build a Yemeni army. “This takes time and it needs patience,” he said.
The spokesman did not reveal when the withdrawal is to take place or what steps or forces it specifically entails. The only thing mentioned by al-Asiri is that the size of the coalition’s naval and air assets on the coastline of the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea will not be impacted.
Washington, the chief Saudi ally in the region, has welcomed the news of the coalition’s shift towards bringing “stability” in Yemen.
“We would welcome and do welcome the statement from coalition spokesperson Saudi General Ahmed al-Assiri, who indicated today that major operations in Yemen are coming to an end and that the coalition will work on ‘long-term plans’ to bring stability to the country,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
The Saudi announcement comes as the death toll from two missiles that hit a busy market in the Mustaba district of Hajja province on Tuesday rose to 119. A further 47 people were wounded in the .
Saudi Arabia launched its military operation against Yemen in late March, 2015, in a bid to bring the country’s exiled former President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi back to power. In 2015, the fighting in Yemen, resulted in 8,119 casualties, 2,795 of them killed and 5,324 wounded, according to UN figures.
Houthi forces overrun Saudi-backed forces in Taiz
By -02/04/2016
The Houthi forces – backed by the Yemeni Army’s 48th Brigade of the Republican Guard – has seized the Waziyah District of Ta’iz City this morning after a violent battle with the Hadi loyalists and Saudi-led Coalition.
According to Tony Toh (Al-Masdar’s Yemeni War correspondent), the Houthi forces overran the center of the Waziyah District after the Hadi loyalists withdrew due to low ammunition.
In addition to liberating the Waziyah District, the Houthi forces also seized Al-Sheikh village and a number of sites nearby.
The loss of the Waziyah District this morning is another blow to the Haid loyalists and Saudi-led Coalition; especially, after they lost the large city of Dhubab in February.
Israel’s Navy New Anti-Ship Missile
Israel’s Navy conducted a successful test firing of surface-surface missiles from a Saar 5 corvette. The test included the launch of missile RGM-84 and a new weapon, assumed to be an indigenous surface-to-surface missile developed for the by ().
The blurred images shown on this video depict a missile longer and faster than the , possibly driven by ram-air propulsion to achieve supersonic cruise and extended range. has been known to continue the development of surface-to-surface missiles beyond Gabriel 3, the latest variant of the Gabriel family that entered service in the early 1970s.
One of the members of IAI’s advanced anti-ship missiles was described in open sources as part of IAI’s Skimmer maritime combat helicopter mission suit.
The existence of such missile was never confirmed but the fact that Israel hasn’t updated its (RGM-84D) missiles into Block II configurations (RGM-84L), unlike most other Harpoon users which implemented this option.
Hints about a possible existence of a new Israeli weapon surfaced in the early 2000s, as IAI participated in an international tender to equip the new ‘Formidable’ frigates of the Singaporean Navy frigates. Eventually Singapore selected the Harpoon missile.
The was designed to be superior compared to most contemporary missiles, particularly when employed in littoral waters. It used an advanced active radar seeker backed by a sophisticated weapon control to optimize operational effectiveness in a target congested battlespace. The missile significantly improved target selectivity capability, especially in littoral waters, typically congested with marine traffic, and interference generating extensive and complex false target signals.
As an advanced attack missile could penetrate the target’s protection, both soft- and hard-kill defenses. It was designed with sophisticated electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) dealing with chaff, advanced decoys and active ECM.
Gabriel 5 and Barak 8 were described as part of a new offensive and defensive system suite under development at IAI’s Missiles and Space division.
Russian confirms Egypt as North African buyer of 50 MiG-29s
The Russian Commission for Military Technical Cooperation has confirmed Egypt as the North African buyer of 50 MiG-29M fighter jets and released fresh details of the Egyptian purchase of several other weapons systems worth at least $5 billion in 2015.
In February Russian officials confirmed the sale of 50 MiG-29M fighter jets to a North African country but declined to identify the buyer.
Rosoboronexport signed the deal in April 2015, and expects to deliver the first two aircraft this year. RAC MiG deputy director general Alexey Beskibalov in February said deliveries should be completed by 2020.
The MiG-29M (and two seat MiG-29M2) is an improved version of the MiG-29 featuring longer range due to increased internal fuel, a lighter airframe, slightly more powerful and improved RD-33MK engines, an in-flight refuelling probe, multi-function displays in the cockpit and improved avionics.
