Chinese state-owned shipbuilder China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company (CSOC) revealed technical specifications of a new frigate design it is showcasing at the LIMA 2017 exhibition in Langkawi.
In an interview with Jane's, a CSOC engineer disclosed that the "new ship is a derivative of the Jiangkai II class of frigates, but features a renewed superstructure".
According to specifications confirmed by the company, the vessel is slightly larger than the Jiangkai II, featuring an overall length of 135 m, a beam of 16 m, a draught of 4.4 m, and a displacement of around 3,850 tonne.
The platform is powered by four sets of 16PA6STC engines in a CODAD configuration, driving two propeller shafts for a top speed of up to 26 kt. It has an endurance of 21 days, and standard range of 4,000 nautical miles at cruising speed of 18 kt.
Where the innovation stands, however, is in the armament suite and sensors. Weapons aboard comprise a single-barrel 76 mm main naval guns, topped up by two six-barrel Type 730A 30 mm guns for short-range self defence.

"Unlike in other versions [of frigates displayed by CSOC at defence shows], the two 30 mm guns are no longer mounted on the main bridge, but rather amid-ship, closer to the [24-cells] surface-to-air missile [SAM] launcher."
The ship's foredeck still hosts a 32-cell vertical launching system (VLS) firing the HHQ-16 (40 km of range), and there are two quadruple launchers of the C-802 surface-to-surface missile (SSM) mounted amid-ship.
Commenting on the sensors, the engineer added that "the above-water sensor suite will include a phased-array radar mounted in an integrated mast. The ship will also mount an over the horizon [OTH] radar comparable to the [active/passive] SLR66".
The frigate's anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities will be provided by a hull-mounted sonar and torpedo tubes.

PAKISTAN ORDERS 2 OFFSHORE PATROL VESSELS FROM NETHERLANDS’ DAMEN
The Pakistan Navy has ordered 2 “multipurpose offshore patrol vessels” (OPV) from the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Shipyards on Monday, June 12.
The contract as signed by the Managing Director of Karachi Shipyards & Engineering Works (KSEW) Rear Admiral Hasan Nasir, an official from Damen Shipyards and the Director of Military Procurement (Navy) Commodore Shafqat Azad.
The Netherlands’ Ambassador to Pakistan Jeannette Seppen and the Secretary of Defence Production Lt. Gen. (R) Syed Muhammad Owais were also present at the signing event.
In in its official , Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) states that the new OPV will have a length of 90 m, top speed of 22 knots and full-load displacement of 1,900 tons.
As per the MoDP, the multi-mission OPV “is especially suited for anti surface [and] anti air operations, maritime security operations, day [and] night helicopter operations, combat search and rescue, and surveillance and intelligence gathering operations.”
The OPV will be constructed at KSEW.

Though not as fast or well-armed as corvettes and frigates, OPVs are optimized for long-range and long-endurance operations, such as policing a country’s exclusive economic zone against maritime criminal activity, such as trafficking and piracy.
The MoDP‘s press statement did not state the specific Damen ship the Pakistan Navy is buying, but the specifications (of 90 m and 1,900 tons) suggest that it is could be the Damen OPV 1800.
The Damen OPV 1800 is slightly shorter at 83 m, but it has a top speed of 22 knots and displacement of 1,800 tons. It has a ferry range of 5,000 nm and endurance of 30 days. It’s flight deck and hangar are large enough for a Sea King-sized helicopter.
Unveiled in 2015, the OPV 1800 is among a series of ‘second-generation’ OPV Damen is marketing along with its Multi-Mission Bay (MM Bay) modules concept.
The MM Bay modules enable the end-user to configure the OPV for a variety of roles without modifying the core design. MM Bay modules for search-and-rescue, mine countermeasures, counter-piracy and counter-narcotics operations are available. The OPV 1800 can carry up to three MM Bay modules.
In terms of armaments, the OPV 1800 can be configured with a 76-mm main gun and two 20-mm guns. Its sensor suite can include a medium range surveillance radar and electro-optical fire control system.
In March 2017, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) unveiled an OPV design based on the Damen OPV 1800. As per , the MMEA is acquiring three of these OPVs for $167 million U.S.
Pakistan’s acquisitions show that it is pursuing corvette-sized ships to recapitalize its surface fleet. Cost is a major factor behind these decisions, corvettes are cheaper to procure and operate than frigates.

So if I have read this right, the indicated frigate, Type-057 has a 32-cell VLS on main bridge and a 24-cell mid-ship? And the Type-730A (30mm) are Chinese CWIS?
That is a darn good frigate, precisely what Pakistan Navy needs. 6 of these, plus the 4 Zulfiqar Class frigates, which hopefully will be upgraded with improved SAMs, Radars, Fire-Control and etc. 10 decent capability frigates along with 12 corvettes and 11 subs is pretty good for Pakistan Navy. What's important is for its personnel to become well versed in these new platforms and expand its war doctrine for an effective defense/offense to protect the Arabian Sea and all trade routes that come along with it.
I am so relieved that Pakistan Navy did not go for Milgem, those ships aren't meant for Pakistan maritime defense.

PAKISTAN AND UKRAINE COMMIT TO STRENGTHENING DEFENCE TIES
Pakistan’s Minister of Defence Production (MoDP) Rana Tanveer Hussain – along with a MoDP delegation – is on a four-day visit to Kiev to attend Arms and Security 2017, Ukraine’s annually-held defence industry exhibition. Additional Secretary of the MoDP Maj. Gen. Tariq Ghafoor and Heavy Industries Taxila (HIT) Chairman Lt. Gen. Muhammad Naeem Ashraf are also part of the delegation.
According to a released by the Pakistani government, the delegation had met with Oleg Gladkovskiy, the First Deputy Secretary of National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine as well as Chairman Inter-Agency Commission on Military-Technical Cooperation and Export Control of Ukraine.
Besides broadly calling for growth in bilateral defence and defence production ties, the two sides sought to “explore … new avenues to enhance the bilateral relations especially in the field of defence production for joint venture with Heavy Industries Taxila and Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works.”
HIT and the Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) are also exhibiting at Arms and Security 2017.

Type-057 is a very decent platform for Pakistan Navy. It places straight into a capability gap that Pakistan Navy has been missing for several years.
Several questions arise from this news. For starters, is this a direct procurement from China or would part of the frigates be built in Pakistan. As well as, LACMs, would these be Chinese or would Pakistan Navy be looking to incorporate Babur-lls on them. And finally, there was news about not only upgrading the F-22Ps, but also construction of a further four improved F-23P frigates. In light of the news regarding Type-057s (or which one PN selects), would the additional improved F-23Ps no longer be under consideration. As well as, would the upgrade of F-22Ps be still carried out?
All in all, when the contract is finalized, and the first steel is cut. Till the war-ships are actually delivered (2028). It stands as an obvious question on whether Pakistan Navy will expand and modernize it's Operational Bases to new locations along the 550 mile coastline. These ought to include Naval Air Stations, in particular, in proximity to Gwadar and Karachi. And would Pakistan Navy have the vision and foresight to mark up future plans for a Navy owned and operated Naval Air Component which would have long range combat aircraft. Let's say, somewhere in 2030s. An Air Component is crucial for Pakistan Navy to fully realize the anti-access/area-denial and full-spectrum protection CPEC South Zone. It is a dead certainty that JF-17s could not possibly be considered for this role. Unless the Thunder has radically revised and expanded its wing-surface area and fuselage to allow it greater range and payload. Of course the discussion regarding a Naval Air Component is something which may be realized in the future. But Pakistan Navy ought to conduct feasibility studies for this. Whether it is realized into actual structures and platforms on the ground, remains to be seen.
