Yeah, it's surprising to many that those 14 are still technically in limbo.

The issue’s been dragged out for years, and you're right the refund never fully materialized either. The U.S. did return a portion of the payment, but hilariously, it came in the form of soybeans rather than actual cash.

Interestingly, some of those F-16s originally meant for Pakistan were actually taken over by the U.S. Navy and are now used as aggressor aircraft at the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center in NAS Fallon, Nevada.

If the deal had been handled properly back then, PAF might’ve pivoted to alternatives like J-10s much earlier. Still, looks like there’s a renewed push now to get some movement on it.

Fucking america, who sends back soybean oil, fuck there should have been interest on the money withheld or dollar-adjusted for inflation.
Just return the money at this point, but something else I saw, another angle.
If that is the case, any idea why the issue wasn't resolved in the years following 9/11 when Washington needed Islamabad to sustain military operations in Afghanistan?

That should've been a good time for Pakistan to resolve such a dispute in its favor.
Yeah, there were a good 10-15 years they could have resolved this, I am guessing that later obama admin never played ball with this? Could be it around the 2010's they were thinking longterm and was india complaining/lobbying too much even back then? Cant be ?

Yeah this is Def F16's related, trump did approve like $300 mil in feb related to Pakistan's f16 thing too, They have lots of older variants that they could/should upgrade if given the chance.

Wait there are STILL SOME LEFT??? I thought they got them all. Man US is such flipflopper.
They dont even give the money back for it either, rather get the money back and throw it to get some more J10's instead
Does AVIC take soybeans as payment?

Does anyone know why Pakistan bought so many Saab 2000 Erieye instead of Chinese systems?

Pakistan’s acquisition of the Saab Erieye preceded its deployment of the ZDK-03 Karakoram Eagle. The Erieye was ordered in the mid-2000s, with deliveries commencing around 2009–2010. This marked the Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) entry into modern airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) capabilities.

The Erieye system offered robust radar range, high-altitude performance, and seamless integration with Pakistan’s command, control, and air defense infrastructure capabilities especially vital along the country’s eastern frontier.

The ZDK-03, equipped with a dorsal radar dome, was introduced a few years later to diversify PAF’s AEW&C fleet and enhance strategic cooperation with China. It was not intended to replace the Erieye but to complement it. While it proved useful in specific roles, the ZDK-03 reportedly faced performance limitations, particularly in radar resolution and high-altitude functionality, which eventually limited its appeal.

More recently, Pakistan acquired four Erieye-ER variants featuring advanced GaN-based AESA radars. These upgraded systems offer a detection range of around 650 kilometers, significantly surpassing earlier models. There are also unconfirmed reports that older Erieyes are either undergoing or will soon receive mid-life upgrades to ER standards, likely at the Kamra Aviation Complex.

Pakistan’s Erieye fleet is currently estimated at 10 to 12 aircraft, making it one of the most sizable AEW&C forces in the region. The Erieye now forms the backbone of Pakistan’s early warning and air defense strategy, providing continuous surveillance over both eastern and western airspace.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the retired ZDK-03 aircraft may have been returned to China for possible upgrades to the KJ-500 or KJ-700 standard. These advanced platforms incorporate fixed AESA radars, superior processing capabilities, and enhanced network integration, a significant boost if the rumors are accurate.

The Erieye’s dominant position within the PAF is not merely due to preference but reflects its superior operational integration. While the Erieye and ZDK-03 were designed for different roles, the Erieye has emerged as the primary AEW&C asset, with the ZDK-03’s future seemingly linked to potential Chinese platform upgrades.

You can probably get three or four J-10s for the price of a single F-16. And the J-10 is a much better aircraft in all aspects.

Still it is understandable Pakistan wants to retain its F-16 investment and keep the aircraft up to date.

The F16 deal makes no sense whatso ever given the costs involved, and the real outcome of having an upgraded platform that will still be inferior to a J10CE/PL15E combo !!!

If it is F16 related, it just shows how tribalism and politicting win over common sense and logic which is clearly to spend that money on J10CE's ...

Sad - if it is to get F16 upgrade kits that will cost more than a new J10CE, and give you less value. Most of the F16s have burnt through their airframe lives already with only the Block 52's having some decent life left. Even though there is service life extension as part of the upgrade, the cost of that with the overall upgrade WILL cost more than a new J10CE. So, what is the point other than a short sighted decision making process by the PAF ??

Maybe its the opposite?? (one can dream) maybe its about PAF selling off its older preblock 52's to someone else and need US approval for it..?
Maybe its related to this that happened in Feb??
