Things are returning back to normal; yet, I am baffled as to what on earth led Iranians to strike and what they have accomplished— aside from humiliation & embarrassment.
It's not rocket science. Both countries attacked the same set of groups (with similar aims, i.e. Balochi secession), across the border in order to absolve themselves from the blame of attacking own citizens.
As you may know, Balochistan is a province in both Iran and in Pakistan. Balochi separatist movements are present on both sides of the border with the same aim: carve a Balochistan out of Iran and Pakistan. Just like Kurds exist as separatists in both Turkey and Iran, as well in Iraq and Syria.
The Balochistan separatists historically have had support from either India or the US. They fund them to destabilize Pakistan and Iran respectively. Baloch separatists have attacked and killed Chinese workers in CPEC projects in Pakistan.
With Iran working on the North-South corridor and expanding the port facilities at Chabahar and Pakistan working on the port facilities at Gwadar Baloch insurgent activities have increased.

It appears that you missed the notion of my post. The geopolitical situation you described is neither secret or novel, thus was wondering why Iranians went to that conclusion to carry out a cross-border strike?
Despite getting punched in the face, they achieved what they set out to.
