It is about time Pakistan stepped out of the shadow of CEATO/CENTO/MNNA cloud. There is a lot to gain from establishing formal military relations with Russia. In the same breath, Pakistan must also establish robust economic ties with Russia. Particularly when CPEC is in full swing and Gwadar Port has already begun Port Operations.

Commissioning ceremony of PMSS ZHOB built for Pakistan Maritime Security Agency was held at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) today. Vice Admiral Abdul Aleem, Chief of Staff (Personnel), graced the occasion as Chief Guest.

This 600 Ton Maritime Patrol Vessel has been built in compliance with China Classification Society Rules. It has an overall length of 68.5 meters, beam of 8.7 m and can achieve maximum speed of 27 knots.

It will play a vital role towards achieving self reliance in Defence Production.

Earlier MD KS&EW, Rear Admiral Ather Saleem in his welcome address said that this project signifies the trust and confidence that government reposes in KS&EW. Well I did say that buying anything from Turkey would be wrapped in uncertainty. Have we not gone down this route enough times to realize that nothing good comes from buying military hardware which is of western origin? F-16s, then (1980s) and now (2017) should be more enough to make Pakistan extremely cautious of procurement of defence hardware from the West. Z-10 gunships ought to be the way forward for Pakistan. And while we are at it (change), Pakistan should effectively cancel the Milgem (tin-can) Corvette deal.

Pakistan ought to be looking toward establishing joint venture production of Frigates and Corvettes with Russia. Just like how Pakistan signed the deal with China for the Submarines. Ka-52 Alligators are formidable, heavy gunships and they have enough firepower to make any enemy shit their pants. It is high time Pakistan enhances and expands military deals with Russia.

Turkey To Upgrade Pakistan Navy’s Three Agosta 90B Submarines...

Turkish firm Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik A.Ş. (STM) is going to upgrade Pakistan Navy’s three Agosta 90B submarines, details of the upgradation programme revealed.

A contract signed in the February this year binds STM to deliver two of the three upgraded submarines including PNS Saad and PNS Hamza in 12 months – which places its delivery in February 2019.

However, the contract of the PNS Khalid allows STM 45 months to deliver it to the navy.

STM, which already had signed a contract to upgrade PNS Khalid in June 2016, also won the second contract defeating France’s company DCN. France’s duplicity in their defence relationship (using Pakistan sales as the worm to lure the Indian fish) could as well be a reason why Turkey got this deal.

DCN has been involved with modernisation work of Pak Navy’s submarines in the past, but it lost credibility ever since there was a leak of sensitive information regarding the Scorpenes.

Under the agreement, a command and control system will be installed in the submarines which will replace outdated sonar suites, periscope systems, radar and electronic support systems.

Within the framework of the project, HAVELSAN and ASELSAN systems will also be integrated into the Agosta 90B submarines.

These subsystems will be exported from the first, second and the third party sources that are South Africa, the UK and Germany.

STM will carry out all the upgradation work at Karachi Shipyards and Engineering Works (KSEW) that is owned by Pakistan Navy.

The modernisation programme for the last two submarines, set to be delivered in February next year, includes:

Kelvin Hughes SharpEye Doppler submarine radar
Airbus DS Optronics SERO 250 periscope and OMS 200 optronic mast
Aselsan ARES-2SC electronic support measures (ESM) system
Havelsan Sonar Integrated Submarine Command and Control system (SEDA)
Havelsan Submarine Data Distribution System (DBDS)
Converters, steering console and rescue buoy

PAKISTAN NAVY REPORTEDLY SEEKING A NEW MARITIME PATROL AIRCRAFT....

As per

, the Pakistan Navy’s (PN) Chief of Naval Staff (CNS) – Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi – stated that the PN was seeking a new, jet-powered maritime patrol aircraft (MPA).[1]

The new MPA is to replace the PN’s aging Lockheed Martin P-3C Orion MPAs, which it acquired in two batches (in the 1990s and late 2000s/early 2010s) from the US. However, the PN lost two of its planes in 2011 due to a terrorist attack on PNS Mehran. Based on available public data, that would leave the PN’s P-3C fleet at seven aircraft, but this is not an official figure.

In July, the PN also inducted the

converted into MPAs. It appears that these are slotted to replace the PN’s aging F-27s. However, it is now clear that the PN is not intending to replace its P-3Cs with the ATR-72; rather, a different – and jet-powered – system is being sought.
