China on Tuesday exported a domestically developed tunnel boring machine to the Philippines, marking the first time that such a sophisticated set of tunnel boring machinery has been exported to the Southeast Asian country. On Tuesday afternoon, the tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 4.8 meters successfully passed the acceptance inspection at the Changsha base of China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Corporation, before shipment to the Philippines.

The tunnel boring machine has been particularly designed for building the diversion tunnel of the Kaliwa Dam in the Philippines. This is the first time that a tunnel boring machine with its intellectual property rights fully owned by China has been exported to the Philippines. The tunnel boring machine has an installed power of 3,800 kilowatts, a length of 372 meters, and a weight of 1,000 tons. It is named "Jasmine", the national flower of the Philippines.

The Kaliwa Dam is an important infrastructure project between China and the Philippines within the framework of the "Belt and Road Initiative". The diversion tunnel of the project involves complex geological conditions such fracture zones. And the equipment needs to excavate a tunnel 17.5 kilometers long. To deal with these difficulties, the development team adopted a series of targeted designs to endow the equipment with strong geological adaptability. The designed capacity of the reservoir on the Kaliwa Dam is 57 million cubic meters. After completion its construction, it can supply 600 million liters of water to residents in Metro Manila every day, which is of great significance to meeting the basic living needs of local residents and improving the quality of life.

PHILIPPINE Infradev Holdings, Inc. on Friday received its first tunnel boring machine (TBM) for the Makati subway project, its chief executive officer said.
Philippine Infradev President and Chief Executive Officer Antonio L. Tiu in a tweet on Friday said that the company received the first of five tunnel boring machines for the Makati subway (MkTr) project.
“Our (Infradev Chairman Jin Hua Ren) will accept the TBM in simple ceremonies,” he said.
Construction of the Makati City subway station 5, the main site where tunnel boring machines will be set up, could happen by 2023.
Infradev aims to finish underground civil works at the main site within the two-year period.
The company earlier said its wholly-owned subsidiary Makati City Subway, Inc. executed a legally binding term sheet with Richer Today, Inc. on March 9 to finance the project and acquire lots in and around the station.

Love this. Really satisfies the inner nerd. Presented in a way different to how western documentaries do similar topics. Love the small insights into Chinese industry. Bits of reality for those who believe China is still in the 19th century. I think there are only a few places on earth where automotive and transport technology development is as sophisticated and well spread as it is in China. Even the old internal combustion engines for commercial autos are slowly catching up even though it's now pointless since the future is integrated electric vehicle types.
