Why is it a surprise everytime a sanction is announced. We knew this was coming for a while. Tech decoupling is happening. Alibaba, Tencent, DJI, and other critical Chinese tech companies we never even heard about are all on the chopping block.
It is very surprising. It is not normal what is happening.
Mainly because the actions from the US government are self-defeating, which is not smart.
Case in point, the forest fires on the America west coast. Since DJI was banned from some US government department, the effectiveness of that department fighting those forest fires were degraded.
This SMIC ban from buying US equipment is really surprising. US semiconductor manufacturers will no longer be dominant in the industry.
The center of the IC industry is in East Asia in the world, and we know which big country is in East Asia.
The US government is barring American semiconductor companies from the biggest market in the world. They may have only barred SMIC, but there is no trust left. You need trust to do business. Who is going to buy American from now on?
You buy American, if you do not want to do business with the Chinese in IC, and China is the biggest market.
The situation is not stable. Only one side will lose here in the long run, which will arrive in 3 year max, IMHO.
Otherwise, the only way the Americans can win here is assume China cannot innovate.
