Sci-tech minister welcomes talent to ‘China opportunity’ as restrictions are tightened in the US amid tech war
  • Many Chinese students and scholars have been caught up in a US crackdown on academia, with Washington revoking more than 1,000 visas since June
China’s minister of science and technology has invited technology talent to enjoy what he called the “China opportunity”, amid an escalating tech war that has seen controls, such as visas, tightened for Chinese students, workers and academics in the US.

Minister Wang Zhigang said that China will “take more active attitudes and pragmatic measures to deepen international tech collaboration, effectively protect the legitimate rights and interests of talents, and let them, from home or abroad, enjoy the ‘China opportunity,’” according to a report by state media outlet Xinhua.

”Even those Chinese manufacturers that produce innovative products on a global scale still depend on foreign components. Back in spring, Yangtze Memory Technologies created a prototype of a 128-layer 3D NAND flash memory chip, which is not yet mass-produced by any company in the world. However, the company depends on foreign supplies, and, fearing a further deterioration in relations with the United States, it, like Huawei, started stockpiling components so that they would last for at least a year.

US ban on SMIC may result in severe shortages of NOR flash
Siu Han, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES
Friday 11 September 2020

A US ban on China's pure-play foundry SMIC, a supplier to GigaDevice, might lead to severe shortages of NOR flash memory, according to Macronix International chairman Miin Wu.

Given that SMIC is already planning for N1 introduction in late 2020, SMIC probably has all the equipment necessary for 7nm.

I have heard about this but i am still unsure what exactly this N1 and N2 is. Is this a proper 7nm/8nm Chip or just an improved 14nm Chip. What are your thoughts Skywatcher?

If this N1 and N2 is a proper 7nm/8nm Chip made with the 7nm/8nm process, then it is very likely the 7nm Localised Production Line will be ready late 2020.

If N1 and N2 is just a improved 14nm Chip with performance close to a 7nm/8nm Chip, then the 14nm Localised Production Line will be ready next year.

We will just have to wait till next year to find out.

In any case, for general semiconductor machinery, i think equipment for 7nm is probably just a improvement over the ones that are used for 14nm. It shouldnt take too long for 7nm equipment to come out. Unless of course a completely new type of machine or process is needed.

N+2 is almost certainly a proper 7nm mode. N+1 sounds a lot like a hybrid node where some elements are closer to 7nm and some are bigger, or a node where the key elements are 7nm but are spaced apart more than a proper 7nm node would be, relaxing the etch and patterning burdens you need to produce elements consistently.

. Furthermore, he believes that “in one year, hundreds of millions of devices should not be over-estimating”.

Huawei officially released the Huawei Hongmeng System 2.0 at the Huawei Developer Conference yesterday. The company said that this system will be available for large-screen devices, watches, car machines etc. Howeber, the Hongmeng OS 2.0 Beta for mobile phones will be available in December. Huawei smartphones will fully support HarmonyOS in 2021.
In addition, HarmonyOS is officially open source, and developers will get emulators, SDK packages, and IDE tools. The beta version of HarmonyOS for smartphones will be available to Chinese developers at the end of 2020. Presently, there are a couple of Hongmeng smartwatches in testing. These devices will officially hit the market sometime next year.
In addition to Huawei’s own products, there are a large number of other third-party products that will adapt to Huawei Hongmeng OS. For example, Midea’s vice president, CIO, and IoT business unit president, Zhang Xiaoyi, once revealed that Midea has established a Hongmeng development team and has developed 15 models.
