I wouldn't necessarily say that, opportunity comes to those with clarity of mind and the will to act after all, and anything can happen in the future.

XICHANG, Sichuan, April 10 (Xinhua) -- China early Sunday morning successfully launched its eighth orbiter which will form part of its indigenous satellite-navigation and -positioning network.

A Long March-3A carrier rocket carrying the "Beidou," or Compass, navigation satellite took off at 4:47 a.m. Sunday from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

It will join seven other satellites already in orbit to form a network which will eventually consist of more than 30 satellites.

The launching of the satellite marks the establishment of a basic system for the navigation and positioning network, said an unidentified spokesperson for the Xichang Satellite Launch Center.

China will launch more satellites within the coming two years to finish a regional network to provide navigation services with high precision and credibility for industries and sectors such as mapping, fishery, transportation, meteorology and telecommunication, in the Asia-Pacific regions, the spokesperson said.

The network is scheduled to be able to provide global services by 2020.

I wonder if the precision for places outside China will be as good as it is in China. If it is, then its price and performance could seriously challenge the dominance of GPS.

The space industry along with Chinese government should cooperate with Lenovo and other Chinese cellphone manufacturers. They should make this system standard into their product lines, maybe even excluding the GPS. Also that free 3 months trial periods should come with new products. This would definitely threaten GPS's market share.

well hopefully the provider will take that into account in his pricing :(

Isn't accuracy to 10meteres more than adequate for civilian non miltary use?

Actually, GPS is free only to the service provider who still charge you for their part of the service. ;)

No, it is not the case. The GPS signal is free for everybody, the paid one is much more accurate as it "unlocks" the signal.

the way GPS works the satellites up in the sky broadcast a signal which any device can intercept for free
