Another New York Times article trying to turn sour grapes into wine. While the US is trying to get its 200 petaflop supercomputers to beat China out by 2018 as planned, China is wasting time bother with supercomputers because artificial intelligence is the new game in town despite the US hasn't develop any yet. Should the US really be daring China anymore?

They do have some relevant points though especially the part about energy consumption.
The super computer requires a whopping 15.3MW of electricity, that's about the same as a large diesel generator at max power.
It probably generates a lot of heat as well.

That applies to all supercomputers. In-fact the new TaihuLight is the most efficient in raw Gflops per watt in the top 10. 3x more efficient than the top US based machine. If you take the High Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) benchmark it does fall back to 3rd place possibly due weaker/simpler cache system. But guess which system tops the HPCG ranking? Its Tianhe-2!

, the Shenwei-64 CPU uses Shenwei-64 Instruction Set and is NOT related to the DEC Alpha instruction set (Alpha AXP). I initially thought early Shenwei CPUs were based on Alpha 21164A/21264A, but looks like that may not be the case.

No those companies do not develop the Silicon ingots.
There are only a few companies that has the ability to develop silicon ingots that are suitable for IC chips especially the 450mm ones which are Shin‐Etsu Handotai (SEH), Sumco, Wacker and, LG Siltron.
Shin-Etsu and Sumco are Japanese, Wacker is German and LG is SK but it seems as if Wacker and LG has not moved up to the 450mm stage due to lack of demand.

We might be doomed without Japanese tech ... thanks Japan ;)

I am sure you know what you are you talking about ... google Petaflop ... so you would appreciate what it means matey ;) ... and the top spot has 93 Petaflops with Chinese CPUs .....

The best Japanese supercomputer is amazingly 10.5 Petaflops (rank 5th) with SPARC64 CPUs and use 12.6 MW ... or roughly 7x less energy efficient than TaihuLight

I know I know without Japanese Ingot ..... will be no Chinese CPU :p again thank you Japan :D

Not really a surprise considering most of the hardware related jobs (server development, circuitry design, etc.) are moving to China.

This is 93 Petaflops monster, and its 7x more energy efficient than the best Japanese machine (with foreign CPUs). Alsi this macvhine probably millions times faster than your PC ... tell me again whether its with Japanese CPU or foreign? ;)

On the other hand, the Red Dynasty's increasing hostile business policies towards foreign companies and NGOs acts as breaks and impede its own efforts to assimilate the world. Resistance isn't futile.
