Do we really need to answer that? Japan's in the "service" economy now.
Japan is still one of the most important player in upstream supply chain of several High Tech industries. some of the critical components comes from Japanese OEMs. the big examples are semiconductor, Robotics and tools.

True, but none of them are consumer goods. It’s not like your average Joe is gonna place order for a dozen semicon tools online.
How do you remove them from the world's upstream supply chain?
Same way you take market share in every sector, obviously. Outcompete them by making the same upstream components better and cheaper and faster.
