It is not new and the data here is already a few years old. But the implications are simply stunning:

Only Harvard and the University of Toronto crack the top 10 in scientific papers in a sea of Chinese institutions. And a fair amount of those those publishing at Harvard and Toronto are probably Chinese too.

Science papers are forward projecting. Their real impact in the practical world of science and economics don't appear until later. We are looking at the harbinger of an unbelievable level of Chinese dominance in the future of science and technology.

Yet another innovative drug created by Chinese scientists got the approval by FDA for treating uvea (vascular tunic) melanoma patients in the US. Melanomas in uvea are hard to diagnose early yet extremely easy to spread by bloodstream. The average life expectancy is less than a year once the cancer cells have started spreading.

Existing treatments rely on surgery and radiation therapy that usually cause permanent damages to the eyes of the patient, including blindness.

近日,中国科学院杭州医学研究所由谭蔚泓院士领衔,刘湘圣、谢斯滔研究员等组成的团队与中国科学院杭州医学研究所眼科研究中心、温州医科大学吴文灿教授团队联合研发的创新药物——核酸适体偶联药物(Aptamer Drug Conjugate,简称ApDC)成功获得美国食品药品监督管理局(简称FDA)孤儿药认定,这也是全球首个获得FDA孤儿药认定的核酸适体偶联药物。这不仅是中国科研团队的一次重要突破,也有可能为全球眼部肿瘤罕见病患者带来全新的治疗希望。
