China Science Daily writes about the first 5 national parks in China and the discussion of building the parks to strike a balance between conservation and development.
In Oct. 2021, China created the country's first 5 national parks, namely:
- Headwaters of the three rivers in Qinghai (
),
- Great Pandas, in Sichuan, Shan'xi and Gansu (
),
- Northeastern Tigers and Leopards, in Heilongjiang and Jilin (
),
- Tropic rainforest in Hainan (
),
- Wuyi mountain in Jiangxi and Fujian (
),
The total area of these 5 national parks is about 230 thousand of sqkms, already greater than the total area of all the 60 national parks of the US.
In the future, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration will decide for about 50 more national parks. By then, the total area of all national parks in China will take as much as 10% of the country's land space.
