So looking at all the news about long distance electricity transmissions and wind and solar farms in places like Gansu, I've been wondering is it possible for China to build a mega network of solar and wind plants in Xinjiang, Inner and Outer Mongolia (gigantic places which have low pop density and high wind/solar) and connect them to eastern China through a giant network of HVDC lines?

Such a network would greatly decrease China's reliance on oil and gas. Though I'm not sure whether its physically/scientifically feasible. And what it would mean for defence (HVDC lines would be vulnerable to missile strikes)

I think Xinjiang is a stretch too far. Inner Mongolia and Outer Mongolia have enough spare land and are a lot closer to the end electrical demand in Eastern and Central China.

Why's Xinjiang too far? China could take an HVDC cable and wrap it around the Earth if it needed to.

It's technically possible, but you're looking at a much higher cost to build a much longer HVDC transmission line.

There should be space for sufficient wind and solar capacity in Inner Mongolia and Outer Mongolia, which are much closer to Eastern/Central China

Isn't outer Mongolia, well, Mongolia? i.e. not part of China?
