Sorry for my question: Some Chinese sites have claimed that the 99 might be inferior to Al-Khalid made in Pakistan. Because Al-Khalid use German automatic gearbox while the 99 uses indigenous manual gearbox. Is it true?

I don't think a MBT is inferior to another simply based on its transmission gearbox. The main purpose of a MBT is still to hit and destroy other armored vehicles. So the firepower and protection components are probably just as critical.

Actually the main purpose of that article was not mean that the 99 is inferior to Al-Khalid. But to criticize the 99 and its manufacturer who was unable to produce/acquire an automatic gearbox. Because automatic gearbox ease the driving thus increase flexibility.

...which dilutes the criticism. Basically, it is saying "haha, you can't make an automatic gearbox; though, I can't either, and I had to buy it from someone who can." So why are we still talking about this?

dependability is very essential tor amodern tanks (or any military vehicles).accoding to israel, half of soviet supplied arab armour were lost or abandone due mechanical problem, and short service life.
and the decision by pakistani army to use european transmission gear box rise the question of reliability and dependability of Chinese make military vechiles.
during the early 90's thailand purchased small number of Chinese tanks, but the tanks become burden to thai army, chief complain short service life, frequent break down in the end the armour end there service in scrap yard, and decide to purchased used M-60 from US army surplus.

Type 99 is probably one of the lightest MBT in th world..they should add more armor

Around 54 to 55, heading to 60 with more upgrades, its certainly heavier than the T-72/T-90 series.

Japan has a 65 ton tank. Figure out why they're suddenly coming out with a 44 ton one.

Weight is not everything.

BillyBoy, you better change what you say in your Location or you get a ban.

Just being curious, with the mods power, can't you edit his "Location"? I think he probably seldom be online, 'coz with 8 months joining the forum, he has only 14 posts.
