New Type98/99 MBT thread

With armor ever going thicker, and composite material getting stronger each year, it would be natural that you start to field better and bigger guns.

I read from some where that the us army was trying to knock down some crippled tank in Iraq, and using the 120mm gun from the M1 and it did not penetrate. So if one day China's army had to face a tank like M1 then they better have a better and bigger gun, so they have a chance to penetrate the armor.

That incident you heard was US army trying to destroy one of their own disabled tank with another. They fired shots against it but could not cause any damage that would ensure no technical secret could be gained from it. So they had to set up explosives to finish it off. But that tank was out of commission from a combat capable standpoint after the first shot.

If one wanted a 140mm cannon on a MBT, one would probably have to significantly improve the FCS to better kill enemy assets beyond 2000m. More advanced FCS, however, are usually more prone to damage by secondary fire (i.e. machine guns, autocannons, airburst artillery shells).

Actually, I have the report in front of me, and the tank was penetrated by a 120mm sabot round into the ammunition compartment, in the rear. There was also penetration from a pair of Maverick missiles, but the overall process also compromised the depleted uranium armour package as well.

Or they can get their SP 120mm mortars to fire smart top attack munitions at them?

The Type-99 has a differant hull, drive-train, turret, main gun, armor, etc...from the T-72. It is not a copy. China copies when the original suits the requirements, (like the Dongfeng-built Humvee, as an example), buys when it is appropriate, (Russian fighters and helicopters, etc...) and designs her own when that is the best solution, (the Type-99 MBT and the J-10 fighter-bomber).
When Spain or Japan build a vehicle that is inspired by the Humvee, no one derides them for 'copying'. When China buys a few, likes them and negotiates a license to build them for the PLA...all of a sudden they are 'copying.'
The Type-99 seems to suit the philosophy of the PLA. It's technology is a mix of East and West. I suspect it will be a success and I pray that my country and China never get to test their armored forces against each other. It would be much more satisfying to become good freinds.
By the way, the U.S. military buys, or builds, foreign weapons systems when they fit the need better than American weapons do, (e.g. the current Airbis tanker contract), or when their is no American equivilant, (the Harrier, etc...).
All this talk of "our tank can make scrap metal of your tank" sounds like a bunch of schoolboys comparing penises. Get over it.

it has a improved mbt2000-style hull, with a improved 99-style turret
basically they are disgarding the t-72-style tank hull, and replaced it with the better improved version of mbt2000 hull
the new hull is bigger but shorter, and the new turret is bigger with newly improved add on armor
the original lazer counter measure system is now replaced by APS

this new tank is called the "Enhanced 3rd Generation MBT" for now, it might get a new name later on
some people call it Type99G, others call it Type99A2

ya i think they did rebuild most rail road recently, supposingly for the olympic game

now all railroads are designed for heavy trains that can go over 200km/h
most rail roads have been rebuilt

so i suppose it'd be alright for 60-tones tanks to operate in the north
