They could have just finally added on a heavier glacis plate, which they should have done years ago (along with a Oplot style turret and autoloader, and enhanced crew survival features)

In peacetime I do not see the reason to put add-on armor on tanks and other armored vehicles. A few for testing purposes but not all of them. Think of the extra fuel requirement and wear and tear on tanks. The extra money spent to fuel and service tank would be better spent elsewhere. However it is good to see an upgraded tank. :china:

Whether or not it's a 96 or 99, I'm more interested with the new stuff on the turret. Is that an active defense system?
One of the different between Type 99 and Type 96 is the position of the driver. Type-99 driver is at the centre, and Type-96 is on the left side.
Some people claim the laser-countermeasure device on top left of the turret is replaced by an Active Protective System (APS) like Arena use by Russia tank.
The commander panoramic viewer has a new design, look just like Leclerc ones. In the picture, a square device fixed on turret right side behind the commander viewer is believed to be a part of APS experiment.
There is no detail information about the tank other than this picture. Interestingly this picture is first revealed on XinhuaNet(Xinhua News Agency), which makes it like official confirmation of this Type-99 upgrade model.

Being top attack, ARENA probably has trouble hitting a Javelin anyway. However, it doesn't look like ARENA to me.
The picture is come with an interview with a Chinese Tank Developer/Expert about the new Japanese Tank.

Within the original post, the reporter asks the expert about the defensive ability about the new Japanese new thank.
The expert said there is some calm that the new Japanese tank font armor able to stand against direct hit of 120L55, and its side able stand against TOW, its rear armor able stand RPG, and the top armor able stand against Javelin. Protection against RPG is believable, against 120L55 and TOW from font and side is not likely and the top against Javelin is totally impossible.
I believe this is also suggested that the APS this new tank may have is not able to against Javelin.
