oh they aren't SOF. The clash of 69 was artificially about territorial disputes, but the reality is that the two nations have fallen out with each other. Small border skirmishes turned into a small war involving division sized units (not sure on the size) and 20 years of aggressive forward posturing.

Ya
In the cold war our news from USSR got directly from the USSRs own news agencyes and this sort of oddities sometimes get lurking in to it....Its a sort of prime example of the wierd soviet utopistic, almoust trippy like athmosphere...

I bet that even if they weren't SOF, their training in guerilla warfare (people's war) was adequate to deal with most of the conscripted Soviet soldiers whose homes were nowhere near the border. Territorial losses are open sore for the Chinese, and as soon as ideology/official party line allowed old disputes surfaced. "

Also, China supplied Afghans with arms in their war against the USSR.
Until 1984 the bulk of arms and
ammo were purchased from China - they were reliable and discreet.

what I like to see are pics of PLA SOF in beach recon using proper diving equipment. I wonder if they use russian closed circuit rebreather or western ones. I just can't find any on the web.

you are not trained in People's War. You are given a weapon and told to fight for the Mother Country.

How do you know?
Western media and scholars have the tendency to demonize chinese govt and chinese in general , thinking that the officers and govt leaders are a bunch of heartless warlords that push their men to their death without a care and the men are just brainless zombie-like grunts. However, contrary to most western views, the PLA do strive to provide their soldier with the best training, although somtimes training is limited by financial issues as in the cultural revolution. my brother-in-law's father served in the PLA from 1967-1982.(and no, he was not conscripted or forced to voluteer, he volunteer by his own will)He did not participate in the Sino-Soviet clash in 1969 but he did served in the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1979 and 1984. He was in the logistic corp and his squad of trucks were ambushed more than once, but he is still alive and well today, along with most of his squadmates. If the PLA was doing like you said, given a weapon and told to fight, would you think my brother-in-law's father would have made it back?

PLA has traditionally relied on Special Recon, a precursor to SOF, for frontline intelligence gathering, and dead SR is almost of no use, so training for SR should be rigorous. From this I deduce that the training for SOF will be even more rigorous and diversified than SR training.

Thanks for good input! China has large population, but man are always valued, especially as soldiers, real and potential. They were planning for big and long guerilla war, involving both men and women, against the Russians in case N.China got occupied-if that were to happen, what you now see in Iraq would pale in comparison!
