no breathing room for ICE car makers in China
A lot of them will end up with inventory they just can't sell.

The electric viking talked about it here. GM is in trouble in China.

Speaking of emissions, Chinese history lesson time!

long, and the intention would be to use it to irrigate the fields. When it was half completed the true purpose was realized, and Qin intended to kill Zheng Guo, but Zheng Guo said: ‘At first I was acting in order to cause dissension, but when the canal is completed it will surely be a benefit to Qin.’ Qin thought this was true, so in the end had the progress on the canal continued. When the canal did make further progress, it was used to cause the stagnant waters to flow, and irrigate the salty land over an area of more than 40,000 qing, so that the harvest totalled one zhong per mou. Thereupon the area within the passes was turned into fertile but uncultivated land, and there were no calamitous years, and thus Qin became rich and strong, and in the end unified the feudal states. Because of this it was called the Zheng Guo Canal.

Ending the lecture with a BYD Qin.

Tesla's price-cut might have indeed backfired and given BYD more market share.
It is worth noting that BYD is already the largest automaker in China based on January-February sales.

BYD not only aims to become the largest automaker in China by the end 2023, they may also set an annual sales record of 3.6 million units.

The time has really changed. Now it's a Chinese company developing sophisticated electric drive system for an European premium NEV brand.

Volvo will produce an all new compact EV in China for exports to Europe and Japan. It will share a platform from Geely.
The new car will be a subcompact sport utility vehicle smaller than the company's other models, or around the same size as the Toyota Corolla Cross.

“The new strategic EV will target a brand new segment,” said Jim Rowan. "It's going to be a brand new demographic, a younger customer [and] a lot more online sales."

Volvo will hold down costs by adopting a shared platform from Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, the automaker's Chinese parent, and by assembling the vehicle at Chinese facilities. It will be cheaper than the XC40 crossover EV, Rowan said.

Battery is Chinese, drive system is Chinese, motor is Chinese... What did the Europeans contribute, the shell?

one way for Chinese automakers to export without facing same level of backlash is by doing it under non-Chinese brand names. Notice how Polestar, MG and Volvo don't attract any attentions?

Anyhow, BYD continuing to focus on its semiconductor division even after the abandoned IPO attempts. It wants to focus on expanding its fab so that it doesn't have to buy as much from abroad.
Interesting that Infineon still has such a large market share in IGBT in China. Must be for Tesla and other foreign brands. Looks like the big 3 of BYD, StarPower & CRRC have total market share of about 50%

BYD chairman says his goal is to beat VW to become the #1 brand in China this year.

highlights:

Wang said BYD became No. 1 in March, even including gasoline-engine cars, but "we wish to be the No. 1 brand for the full year." That means the Chinese brand needs another 70% annual growth in sales, assuming the German rival's sales volume remains stable.

Then he talks about the general market:

"In 2022, the Chinese new energy vehicle market was in a state of inadequate supply over demand, but it has entered into a war of elimination in 2023," Wang Chuanfu said.
"I would not dare to say it last year, but we now have an advantage in terms of economy of scale," he said, where unit costs are kept low and efficiency rises.

Confirms what many of us have been saying for a while now: the Chinese EV space is overcrowded and a lot of companies will have to die.

meh, beating VW group is easy. Their goal is a lot higher than that

Seres unveiling new car using BYD's DM-i motor and Huawei HiCar3.0. So basically you can build your own cost effective NEV now by piecing together techs from leading providers. Seems like where we are going. And it's dirt cheap and competes against BYD song. Doesn't seem like BYD minds

SiEngine's new SoC has now started delivery to customers. Geely & FAW should be using this. It uses 7nm process, so probably TSMC

BYD shipping ESS to South Africa. Huge growth opportunity for BYD.
