Someone on Chinese social media wrote about BYD's DMI lineup and the daunting task for everyone else. It's really very hard to compete on cost with BYD due to vertical integration. In terms of technology, BYD is also top notch. With their expanded production, cost is now very low for DM-i and they can just lower prices to the point where others can't compete.
I think Nanjing Auto had brands like Yue Jin (跃进) light truck, Iveco commercial vehicles with Fiat, and bought MG Rover Group assets. Nanjin Auto eventually merged with SAIC in 2007. The reason that SAIC today can sell MG branded cars all over the world is because that brand assets were carried over from Nanjin Auto. As a result, Nanjin no loger has an independent major auto company. Nanjin did try EV once with Byton in 2017, which was defunct in 2021.
They should continue merging. Too many crappy companies even today. Like Dongfeng and Chery for example.
