I think this is my regret about the brave new world of electrification. As manufacturers switch their R&D funds to electric vehicles, there will increasingly be prospective ICE developments "left on the table" as simply uneconomic to pursue. The internal combustion engine has come a long, long way over the last century, and one wonders what next several decades could've brought if not for the EV revolution.
The analogy that springs to mind is how the significant innovation of
lamps was rapidly outshone by the march of electrified lighting.
