New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

PHEV exports are growing much faster than BEV thanks to limited grids, tariffs, etc. The trend is most visible in Europe.

  • Chinese plug-in hybrid exports surged 210% in the first half of 2024 versus 40% for battery-only vehicles.
  • Europe saw a 551% jump in Chinese hybrids amid struggles to meet 2035 zero-emission goals.
  • Hybrids are expected to dominate exports for 3–5 years.

Plugin hybrid sales are higher because there is no additional tariffs, unlike BEV

The trend also holds true in markets without excessive BEV tariffs, as noted in the article.

The charging infrastructure gap remains the fundamental driver of this shift. Markets from Southeast Asia to Latin America lack the charging networks necessary to support mass adoption of battery-only vehicles, making hybrids an attractive compromise that addresses range anxiety while still offering some environmental benefits.

Geely Galaxy EX5 in Vietnam. Videos features automatic translation into English. The reviewer/driver is owner of one of the prominent tech forums in Vietnam, making his perspectives significant. The general assessment is positive; however, with a price tag of approximately 32000 dollars, I doubt it will thrive in the marketplace.

NEV registration for the past week. I think AITO is fading a little bit. M8 backlog likely has gone down a bit. Too much competition. I saw S9 next to M7 in the mall today. I dont' see how any family would buy S9 over a lower priced M7. Space offered by SUV is just so much better. It feels much larger. So, S9 is reserved for corporate customers, who are still mostly buying 56E. Z9 numbers are even lower. So they need to come out with 1100 or 1200V version soon.

Seems like Li Auto is still not recovering from their fiasco

Nio is also surprisingly strong because of Onvo. But eh I really still don't know if they're going to make it.

Meanwhile Denza and Avatar are looking so weak recently
