Russian auto market in Q1. Up big time YoY nd Chinese automakers are really benefitting from this. Looks like all that pent up demand from last couple of years are now getting fulfilled now that Russian consumers are happy with their new choices. I'm impressed with just how many Li Auto vehicles were sold in Russia in March since it has not even officially entered the Russian market.
Aside from Lada, everything else in top 10 are Chinese. Belgee is apparently a JV between Geely and Belarussian state

I assume shadow Russian sales (all those cars from brands that aren't in Russia are being bought somewhere after all) are one of the reasons why all the estimates on the Chinese EV market growth rate were consistently underestimated every single time.

Russian economy is equal to the wealthiest provinces within China (nominal GDP right in-between Guangdong and Jiangsu); Moscow alone basically adds another 1st tier city to the original picture. Even if premium cars are essentially x2 overpriced compared to China - that's a lot of unaccounted demand, which is rather easy to miss for even very good market analysts... especially those who don't really encounter sovereign risks all too often.

I am fairly sure Chinese EVs would sell well in the major Russian cities if they were more widely available. Unfortunately most of the Chinese EV manufacturers have thus far given the Russian market a wide berth wishing not to risk possible exports to Western countries. So a lot of EVs are parallel imports. But this should change over the next year or two as more EVs from other Chinese manufacturers enter the market.

Parallel imports are now expected to fall, as the Russian government has increased taxes on all models not officially represented in Russia. March was the last month of advantage for Li Auto.

The only Chinese EV manufacturer officially in Russia is Voyah so far, selling around 1,500 or 2,000 units per month.

Voyah will likely benefit, as the others fear Western sanctions and do not find the Russians worthy enough of their products to challenge the West.

There was supposed to be an EV version of the Moskvitch i.e. the JAC Sehol X4. You should also expect more Chinese EVs to enter the Russian market this way over the next year. The Russian factory Avtotor in Kaliningrad also assembles licensed cars and will likely build some Chinese EVs. But again it won't be the major EV vendors.

If we are talking about high end Chinese EVs chock full of imported Western electronics they probably can't export them without being sanctioned anyway.

I won't be too surprised if it was lobbied for by Chinese SOEs already on the market.
This is more about more premium segments anyways.

The relaxation of parallel imports was done by the Russian government to temporarily alleviate the lack of certain products in the Russian market after the Western sanctions were imposed. But it isn't something they expect to do long term. As Russian auto production recovered of course they took duty free parallel imports out. This is being done to protect the Russian auto industry.

The Russian government also has a long term plan to reduce the amount of imports in the Russian economy over the next decade to make the country even more sanction proof. So if any foreign company wants a large share in the Russian market they better manufacture there.

Next year Russia is expected to start the sales of its own EVs.

The Moskvitch plant will manufacture the Atom model:

In a higher category Chery Exlantix plans to start selling officially EVs still this year.

And in addition to Voyah, I discovered that Hongqi also already sells some EVs officially.
