Wonder when Chinese cities are going to start charging electric cars for plates like current fuel cars. Every year there's more and more electric, we may see in few years the policy change, and no more free plates.

keeping Chinese cities walkable and bikable should be the priority. It's nice to have electric cars but they are still cars - they take up parking spaces, are dangerous and in general, the more you design for cars the more hostile environments get for humans. as an extreme example in the US there are places with no sidewalks, businesses behind 100+ m parking lots, wide roads with only street level unprotected crossings, etc. which are actually extremely inefficient at moving people while simultaneously being very dangerous to both motorists and pedestrians.

currently, in most Chinese cities you do not need a car to run errands. walking or bike is good enough, and you can just take transit to work. if you need private transport for an emergency, taxi or rideshare is good enough too. it is absolutely right to cancel free plates for electric cars later on - but charge pure combustion cars even more.

Right on. It is premature to charge license plates for electric cars. The focus is on greening the whole society, walkable paths and sustainable human flow. Just charge non electric plates for now

Im not sure how it works in China with second hand car market, but I guess you also want a nice big fleet of cars going into the second hand market.
