just how much chips does BYD semi supply to its auto division, well I'm glad you asked
China has been working hard to lower cost of logistics. There are more freeways, faster freight cargo railways, less toll gates, etc.I wonder what are the transport costs to move those inland produced models to ports for export and whether they'll be better off building an export oriented plant with its own roro port
My overall assessment of the short to medium term future of Chinese brands in Australia (especially in regards to EVs), in order of best to worst:September was a disappointing month for Chinese vehicle brands in Australia.
Huh, thanks for that infoIt costed about 3000 yuan ($400) for my friend to ship his Tank 300 from Lhasa to Shanghai in 2022. I’d imagine car manufacturers’ cost per vehicle to be less than 1/3 of that “retail” price, if they do it by road. They most likely ship by rail.
I think MG will do well in most ex-british colonies and some european countries. The MG badge is incredibly influential in terms of aesthetics. Cars that feel like garbage with baojun logos look decent with an MG badgeMy overall assessment of the short to medium term future of Chinese brands in Australia (especially in regards to EVs), in order of best to worst:
BYD>MG>LDV>?Chery/GWM
BYD I think will eventually dominate, given they will have the largest range of models on offer, including probably being the first to offer an electric ute which is Australia's top selling car type. Yes it's been a poor few months, but I wonder if it's due to supply going to other countries? They've recently launched a lot of models all around the world. It may also explain why annoyingly there is still no date for dolphin/seal deliveries. I'm also hopeful the seagull will eventually make it.
MG short term looks bright with the MG4 only in its second month of sales was the fourth best selling EV (behind the two Teslas and the Atto3). However I think they will need to introduce a cheap SUV model on a dedicated EV platform that can compete with Atto3 (ZS EV is on ICE platform and hasn't got the best reviews). Does MG/SAIC have one in the works? I heard they may want to import rebadged IM/Rising models but those are luxury, so this is a gap that they can hopefully fill soon.
GWM I think might actually be in trouble here in the medium term. The Ora isn't selling well and AFAIK they have no plans to introduce any more BEV models here. They need to get a move on.
Chery is a bit of an unknown. There'll be an omoda 5 EV next year but no idea how good it is.

They're being driven by proud Vietnamese-CanadiansMG will release the Cyberster next year, journalists have already tried the preproduction version.
Kind of a turning point for SAIC-MG and will be interesting to see the reception a true "Halo" car has for a Chinese brand.
Speaking of receptions, I have seen 3 VinFasts in Toronto. I'm honestly surprised I've seen that many for a car that has been universally panned by critics and is not cheap.
