New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

Saw this floating on reddit and people are seething that it doesn't show "where cars are made". Instead, it shows sales numbers by where the company is headquartered.

Apple makes most of its products in China yet that's not where the profits are flowing. Mexico makes tons of cars for various foreign manufacturers yet they don't get any of the profits. So showing location of company HQ is a better measure of who actually controls the EV supply-chain. Because profits matters.

I think the criticism is most relevant to Stellantis, which is an assembly of USA/French/Italian brands that has little meaningful connection to the Netherlands.

Of course, Japan's late EV entry is known to everyone now but it's still striking how far behind they are.

According to the EV volumes website at least, Toyota's EV/PHEV sales actually declined in 2022 from 2021. How is that even possible?

On a vaguely related note, I enjoyed Savagegeese's recent review of Toyota's BZ4X, which pairs a vicious judgement of the car ("just buy a RAV4", "there is no reason to own this vehicle") with a very topical "AI review" satire:

important things to think about. The Chinese market will consolidate. Who can survive this upcoming bloodbath will be interesting to see. As much as I appreciate BYD, I think it would be wrong to take its position for granted. BYD still needs to continue to keep cost down through vertical integration and deliver new products that people want.

another disappointing month for BYD in sales. April should be higher due to new plants starting production. Looks like they are having some issues

Chery will be launching new EQ7 all electric SUV later this year

Articles continue to come out from the West like they can actually escape the far more productive and power Chinese supply chain. It takes long time to build up the experience to refine minerals and then to build up supply chain and such.

Elon Musk: Tesla Cybertruck Is Dead, $20,000 City Car Is Coming

Elon Musk said this week he has been wrong about so many things and that he is going to change his ways to bring EVs to the masses.

[My Comment]
Elon, I said here a few months ago that you have to have a Corolla beater in order to sell anywhere near 10mil cars a year. Come here and read often instead of wasting your time on Twitter.

Why are you posting, and replying to, an obvious fake april fools article?

A lot of EV subsidies expired at the end of 2022. Many Chinese car buyers rushed to buy new EVs in 2022Q4 to take advantage of the subsidies before they expire, resulting in high 2022Q4 sales and lower 2023Q1 sales. This doesn't take away from the overall trend of rapid expansion in EVs in China. 2023Q1 EV sales are still far ahead of 2022Q1 numbers despite the expiration of subsidies.

More on BYD sales breakdown. I put the trend in there. The Tesla price cut definitely affected sales of Han/Tang/Seal. Song is also down, but both Qin and Dolphin are up. More importantly, Denza is doing well with just 1 model. I wouldn't be surprised if it hits 20k a month by the end of this year. A lot to look forward to for BYD

On the sodium ion battery part, I think it will take a while for it to be a real thing. I explained that here. Developing scale and production expertise take a long time

Tesla is looking for help from CATL for a reason. It takes some expertise to ramp up production and deliver a lot of LFP batteries.

And the best part about CATL when it comes to IRA is that it will be using supply chain operated by Chinese companies (even if they own under 50% of those refined factories)
