New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) in China

I find it a pity. I really like the Skoda Rapid that sells for just 70-80k rmb. It's one of the few cars in my ideal size range that's on the chinese market. (I prefer small cars)

But it makes a lot of sense that Skoda is quitting. Chinese buyers love large cars, and Skoda's large cars are simply not competitive. For the price of an Octavia (around 13w) you can get a similarly sized Volkswagen Sagitar or Lavida, which most people view as a higher class brand than Skoda.

This is not the 2000s anymore when VW's "german" branding was high enough that another budget brand could exist below it. VW is now quickly dropping to the same budget space as Skoda. Skoda only had 2 choices, to drop their prices further and become an ultra-budget brand, or to quit the market. It makes sense that they quit since lowering prices would have made their profits disappear anyway.

Btw, not sure if anyone posted this but Japanese cars are dying in the Chinese market much, much faster than I thought they would

Last month, BYD's sales (230k) was around the equivalent of Toyota, Honda and Nissan added up together. Nissan only sold 40+k cars in total, less than 1 model of BYD (Song).

This is really good. German cars at least bring the benefit of the car lobby which makes the German government less hostile. But Japan's government is a total puppet of the US. Keeping them around is worthless.

Do you have the November 2022 sales numbers by brand in China?

Skoda is basically the economy car division of VW. Their main customers are people that want a VW, but couldn't afford one. How is Skoda going to survive in a market where VWs have to be sold at 30%-50% discount just to stay competitive? It's evident that Chinese consumers would rather purchase a BYD/Geely/Chery etc at full price than a foreign car even at steep discount. It's absolutely stunning how fast the position for foreign automakers have fallen. I wouldn't even be surprised in 10 years, most foreign automakers would be regarded as cheap options for teenagers and students.

How about German brands like BMW, Mercedes and Audi, are they still popular?

Hongqi sales this year up to November is 42158+21643+12380+6812+25020+21859+22275+27026+33005+34252+25240
= 271670

They will need an above average sale of 29k in December to beat 300k total

Overall, a little disappointing as that is almost exactly the same as last year

you can see my posts above. BMW is slashing a lot of their prices by 30 to 35% to sell. Of course, not all of this is due to NEV popularity. There are end of year sales drive right now to get rid of inventory and such. But if European brands can't sell as much ICE cars in the future, they will also produce fewer and close down factories.

BYD forklifts getting delivered in Thailand. They are going to conquer ASEAN countries in more than just PV markets. Just a matter of time.
Also winning order for 240 electric public buses from Chengdu gov't valued at 184.6 million RMB. Building factories in certain city really helps them winning public contracts there.

well, with BYD encroaching into the higher end market next year, there will be even less breathing room for them. Whether people like it or not, BYD is taking over the entire Chinese market. Before UK politicians even noticed anything, BYD has dominant market share in energy storage batteries and electric buses market. It's just quite amazing how fast these things work.

Letopa Power coming out with the world's thinnest 7kwh energy storage system using blade battery called Bladewall48140. This looks so much better than those ugly battery box units that BYD itself is offering. Thank goodness BYD is moving to blade battery for energy storage.
