Shanghai government should be building more factories for Nio, not tesla.
Now that you mention that, does anyone know why Nio didn't build their factory in Shanghai? Instead choosing to build in Hefei.

Seems like it would be a no brainer to at least build 1 factory in their hq city first

you build factories where you can get the lowest cost and cheapest production. That's probably not going to be Shanghai. After all, even Tesla's plants are actually outside of Shanghai. There is no other way they can get that much land.

Tesla right now is exporting more than half of their Shanghai production and using 90% Chinese content on their cars. I would say that's a huge plus for China.

For real? First time I've heard this statistic. So Teslas are basically a Chinese product wrapped in an American label.
The ones that are produced in Shanghai apparently use 90% China produced content. So yes, it's a big deal that Shanghai Giga is basically doing all the exporting for Tesla in APAC + large portions of Europe

Remember NIO was on the verge of bankruptcy at the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020.

That was when the Hefei government bailed out NIO and bought a 17% stake. Where was the Shanghai government during this time?

Do we know if Nio's rnd, design and prototyping is done in shanghai or the new hefei location?

I know Tesla uses CATL and BYD batteries but I did not know 90% of their parts are Chinese. That is pure domination.
I remember it was "90% of localisation rate" for Tesla in Shanghai, but what does it mean, it means 90% of parts come from only Chinese owned manufacturers in China to Tesla? Or it means also that foreign owned companies producing in China are also included in this 90% localisation rate?
