Surprisied Xpeng isn’t doing as well overseas. I’ve see their cars, they look very sleek, well designed and modern, some even better than BYD in my opinion. It seems that hasn’t translated in huge sales per se.

That's why I said it was either a blunder showing this to a competitor (he's not a spy if you invited him for a tour) or a power move by showing them something they simply cannot replicate and may not even be China's best to demoralize them.
It’s actually funny that China has become more open than western countries and their developed allies this past years. I can’t imagine an American/western/Japanese tech company allowing a Chinese company officials to come and tour their high tech manufacturing facilities . This will create a huge backlash for those involved .

That's the effect when you're better. You have more confidence, embrace competition and become a Captain America (or China) type of guy. When you're behind and it's pissing you off that a country you hate is eating your lunch, you get secluded, angry and defensive.

August 2025 was the first month in which four Chinese brands made Australia's Top 10. Over the last twelve months, BYD has dethroned Tesla as Australia's #1 NEV brand and China has surpassed Thailand as Australia's #2 source of vehicles. It remains to be seen which milestone will come next: a Chinese brand cracking Australia's Top 5, or China displacing Japan as the single-largest source of Australian vehicles.

Chery's rapid success is particularly notable given that they have now spun off Omoda Jaecoo as a separate brand.

BYD Shark 6 is still going strong at 1261 vehicles sold for the month, but it's worth noting that it actually hasn't been BYD's top-seller here these past couple of months, that honour going to Sealion 7.
It seems Lethe has stopped posting so i might try to resume in his stead. I used an LLM to collate and organise the data into a list stylized in the same way Lethe did.

BYD being up in 3# place barely a month into the Iran war is impressive they might actually snag 2nd place by the EoY if not for the whole year maybe even. Chery has entered the top 10 with one of their subrands on the verge of entering the top 20, Zeekr and Geely are both in top 30 with Geely itself at No.20. Theyre combined ranking might enter the Top 15 depending on how strong the EV effect is and how well theyre received.Total Chinese brand market share will probably be over a quarter this year well ahead of the Koreans at 14% but still well behind the Japanese at 45%+.This may change in a few years though

^ lol, I was in the middle of writing my post as you posted! I did post about the full-year 2025 results a while back. But yes, I was thinking of just quarterly updates from now on. There's just too much noise in the month-to-month data, and I figure folks probably don't need to read about our modest corner of the world market that often anyway.


Australia Q1 2026

By end 2025, an unprecedented three Chinese vehicle brands finished in Australia's Top 10: GWM, BYD & MG. With the rapid rise of Chery amidst declining sales for MG, the question going into 2026 was if could we potentially see four Chinese brands in Australia's Top 10 in 2026? The answer, at least for Q1, is yes:

Q1 sales of selected brands, with brand rank and change YoY:

BYD: 17,541 sales, #6, up 100%
GWM: 14,878 sales, #7, up 29%
Chery: 11,736 sales, #9, up 94%
MG: 10,595 sales, #10, down 7%

(There are many other Chinese brands in Australia, but the volume drops off steeply from here, with the next highest being LDV at #19 with 3,264 sales.)

BYD launched Atto 1 (a.k.a. Seagull a.k.a. Dolphin Surf, not sure why they went with the most boring name) and Atto 2 here at the end of 2025, adding Sealion 5 and Sealion 8 in early 2026. BYD has also launched its separate Denza brand here from with B5, B8 and D9 vehicles, collecting 627 sales to date over two months. I think the below chart format has just about run its course as the number of models available continues to increase, but I will include it for the sake of completion. I have the per-model, per-month numbers here from launch to date so I can collate and present that information in a different form if folks would find that more interesting or useful.

for electrified vehicle sales and enquiries, for obvious reasons. Not too long ago, NEV sales were struggling to reach double digit share. In March, the split was 14.6% BEV and a further 7.6% PHEV! Needless to say, this bodes well for both BYD and other Chinese brands with strong NEV portfolios.

If we zoom out beyond brands to look at auto groups and the broader Australian market:

#1 Toyota (incl. Lexus): 47,324 sales
#2 Hyundai-Kia (incl. Genesis): 40,110 sales
#3 Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi: 22,446 sales
#4 Mazda 21,890 sales
#5 Ford 20,172 sales

Toyota sales are down at the moment (-23% on the primary brand) mostly owing to RAV4 model changeover, expect numbers to pick up from April. The R-N-M alliance is more appropriately rendered as M-N-R in the Australian context. GWM as a "brand" listing already encapsulates Haval, Ora, Tank, etc. hence no change. Geely group sales are split fairly evenly between the three majors of Volvo, Geely and Zeekr, which is a creditable success for those latter brands that are only new here. Beyond the Chinese brands that have already "made it" in Australia, Geely and Zeekr are clearly the next two to keep an eye on.

, has the potential to undermine consumer confidence in Chinese brand vehicles in Australia. The major hurdle for Chinese brands here is in building consumer confidence in long-term reliability and support. This sort of thing does not help. Nor will the inevitable market failures to come...

My experience with BYD Sealion 7 vs Xpeng G6 vs Zeekr 7X and IM 6 (IM LS6)

Mechanically it's Zeekr/IM>>Xpeng>BYD

BYD is definitely mass market while Zeekr and IM are in the luxury segment. I believe Xpeng is likewise positioned within the luxury segment but a test drive shows the Xpeng G6 is neither as refined wrt to ride, cabin noise and handling compared to Zeekr 7x/IM LS6. Xpeng G6 doesn't feel much different from the higher end of BYD, eg. Sealion 7.

Price wise it's also IM LS6/Zeekr>Xpeng>BYD
Looks wise, it's IM>Xpeng>>Zeekr (from my Wife's perspective) :p

Software wise, I think Xpeng is the best of the 3 luxury brands - Xpeng>Zeekr>IM
IM is using MG software and has really been poorly adapted from their China version.
But I think most people don't really get a firm idea of the software strengths and flaws of a car from just a test drive.

So from simple test driving, it's hard to "like" the Xpeng G6 in comparison to the Zeekr 7X and IM 6 unless that difference in driveaway cost for your local market makes a big difference - in which case, the Sealion 7 comes into the picture with a strong alternative.

An aside, it seems that the sales figures reported for Bangkok Motor show has lumped IM sales within MG, whereas BYD-Denza and Toyota-Lexus are reported separately.

In the 80’s Chinese officials visited lots of civilian and military factories in the West.
The strong will always be more open.

You realize he was touring a supplier’s factory right? Did you know that Chinese companies supply Japanese companies with auto parts? Strange but true…
Even crazier, there are Honda factories in China!
For the cherry on top, in the American Factory documentary there were Honda engineers in a Chinese owned factory in America!

Sarcasm aside, there was a recent article posted that Toyota’s Chinese EV models use something like 90% domestic parts, even the made in Japan EVs were using a large percentage of imported Chinese parts.
