The point is to flex that you're so rich you can spend money on a barely functioning car.

The TV series 蜗居 might have helped promoting LandRover among the Chinese parvenues around 2010, like the upsurge circle of 煤老板 in northern China. For them, luxury large SUVs did have practical uses in addition to showing off wealth.
