I actually like it. I'm sure they have figured out cool ways to use the two short lasers. For one thing, they can actually do what they are designed to do on an actual long sword, acting like a cross guard to protect the user's hand. Since no ordinary object can protect the hand against an energy beam of the opposing light saber, you actually would need energy beams as cross guard to stop your opponent's light saber from sliding up and cut your hands.

Yeah in real life swords, but in sifi swords, if a jedi or seth needs that on their light saber, than they are NOT much of swords fighter in the first place.:p:eek:

Well, if you are a Jedi master going up against a Jar Jar Bink, you can act cool and need no cross guard. However, if you are going up against a Sith Lord like Darth Maul, you want to have all the protection you can get. Actually, from the look of it and it's color, it should be a Sith Lord wielding that light saber.

By the size of the person, it might be Benedict Cumberbatch as a new Sith Lord. Maybe he turns out to be an Inquisitor who aren't true Sith Lords. If you don't want to hears rumors, don't read below.

If you've read how the movie opens, that's apparently true which leads to the search for Luke Skywalker. Supposedly Luke has been gone and missing since soon after Return of the Jedi. The rumor mill says Luke Skywalker has turned to the dark side and wields Darth Vader's light saber. So that person in the trailer could be also Luke Skywalker but the proportions don't seem to fit him. If this is true that Luke turns to the dark side, then I imagine there's going to be a parallel where in the end of this trilogy, Luke returns to the light like his father did before him.

look I am committing a cardinal sin in Scifi here I am looking at it from a realistic and practical standpoint. the light saber of star wars is actually a pretty much a terrible sword.
the blade has no weight so all the weight of the weapon is in the hilt this means that it lacks the weight that is needed to be used to pull a lot of the stunts seen in starwars. it also means that unless your using the force you don't always know where the blade is going.
Traditional European swords that use a Cross guard always have a blunt guard because it's so close to the wrist that it often comes into contact. If that happens with a lightsaber cross guard your going to loose your hand. additionally the reason for the Cross guard was not just to block it was also a attack.
The light saber of the Original starwars was based on Asian styles of swords. those being the Japanese Katana the Chinese Jian and miao dao. those are straight to semi straight double handed long thin blades designed not for fencing but for powerful slashes and cleaver like chops. the Style this sword is following is the European longsword style. that was designed for fighting in a very different style it optimized the thrust and sacrificed the slash and chop. the blade and cross guard in fact were meant for fighting armored knights which required a different style of fighting then unarmored battles. in an armored battle a knight would often hold the blade, a technique known as half swording this was done so that the knight could use the sword like a short spear and thrust into gaps in armor. the cross guard was designed not just to stop the enemy blade but also so that the knight could swing the sword like a hammer. In a fight a light saber with a cross guard can't do that.

Thanks for the info! I can't wait to see what they came up with in terms of the new fighting style they had to come up with to accommodate the new light saber. This could potentially be the next Darth Maul.

I'm impressed that they put in the detail for the lightsaber crossguard

I'm firmly in the camp of believing those cross guards are stupid.

All they would do in a real sword fight is to channel any slashing attack into the hilt, thereby destroying the whole thing and probably the wielded into the bargain.

But no doubt they have some gimmicky role planned for those little sabrelings.

and i happen to agree. this is a gimmic. only advantage I can think is if he can use telekinesis to fight with it. other then that there is no real advantage.
That said Cross guard swords were in use for centuries. the guard worked on a real sword. it did it's job until the Europeans began moving to the rapior and sabre when european's stopped wearing armor.

See...this is what happens when you get AJ Abrams in charge of the new upcoming Star Wars to mess up with SiFi tradition and put in some gimmicky light saber for looks. Those cross guards light saber better be shooting off some laser or something.:p
